  1. Yeah, I really want to get to the Brian Wood stuff - I know he turned out to be a bit of a creep but I've enjoyed his work since Channel Zero back in the day and he's at least acknowledged his issues and is said to be working on them.

Maybe it's just me getting old but Millar's Ultimate X-Men just seems so...nasty.  Everyone is a horrible trash person but worse they're witless to a person.  I like my fiction dark but after 12 issues there isn't a single character I can get behind on the team.

  2. I liked the end of the Dredd story in last week's prog, with the dawning realisation on what the impact of investing in education could be...not very subtle but that's ok.

  3. JOHN CONSTANTINE: HELLBLAZER #10

    Written By : Simon Spurrier
    Art By : Matias Bergara
Cover By : John Paul Leon

The specter of his older self (and the terrible bargain he made to get another chance at life) has been playing a cat-and-mouse game with John Constantine for months now - but now the game is over, and it's time to get down to business. Namely, the business of destroying absolutely everything that made that second lease on life worth living...

  4. It looks like Ultimate Spider-Man was relaunched but collected under the name Ultimate Comics Spider-Man..naturallly.  The relaunch lasted 15 issues before jumping back to the original Ultimate Spider-Man numbering and coming to an end shortly thereafter.

I'm reading some of Ultimate X-Men while waiting for the aforementioned to go on sale and it's not very good, Mark Millar being Mark Millar so everyone's a total dick with zero charm.

  5. All good things in time!

Enjoying the second Sigmar book more than the first, though I haven't warmed to him as a protagonist at all.  Some interesting little nods to The War Of Vengeance, I should look online cause I bet someone's superimposed the world map from that era over the more 'modern' human one.  More importantly though, zombies!  Looks like Sigmar will have to contend with the walking dead which may lead to the return of Nagash, maybe ?

  6. Finished Ultimate Spider-Man, which is to say that I finished Volume 12.

I think we all know that Peter dies to make way for Miles but I was left thinking that the manner in which they did this - namely Hulk punching a magical ball -  was super lame until Parker opened his damn eyes in the very last panel!

Turns out there's a chunk more Spidey in the form of Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, why does this shit have to be so bloody confusing ?

  7. All's right in the world as....(USM Spoilers ahoy)....

Peter and MJ are back together, yay!  Ultimate Clone Saga thrust them back into each other's arms but the drama don't stop as Kitty Pryde is now going to their high school!  I don't want to wait for our lives to be over....

Bendis assembling the street heroes around Peter was kind of weird, I love his run on 616 DD but this just felt out of place.  I did like his Ultimate Moon Knight though.

  8. More USM spoilers below.

The broadening of the universe isn't really what I was looking for - I'm not in it for Ultimate Doctor Stranger or whatever, just give me poor Peter Parker juggling being a teenager with being a really bad superhero please!  To be fair, there's still plenty of that, just gotten to him hooking up with Kitty Pryde which is an interesting idea, do feel really sorry for poor MJ though!

Black Cat puking on Peter's crotch after discovering he's a teenager was real funny!

  9. Righted the ship and finished off the first Legend Of Sigmar book which, at least, ended on a high note with a pretty good big battle sequence.

Some spoilery talk follows, overall it was an alright read.

The series as a whole is about the rise of humanity in the Warhammer setting and the first book ends with Sigmar being crowned Emperor of the fledgling human empire.  Wasn't a bad book by any means but it all felt a little too easy for Sigmar, it's not exactly a rags to riches story - he's the son of a king and wields a powerful magic hammer!

Parts of it reminded me of criticism I've heard aimed at Rothfuss' infamously unfinished trilogy, old Sigmar wins kings and queens to his side by being the very best at everything.  He shags a warrior queen so good that she of course joins his growing alliance.  King of cringy stuff but then the audience is adolescent boys I guess!

The big battle sequence that caps the book off is good though, quite short but I got into it.

  10. I'll be diving in when all three are available in soft back - no way my old man memory will allow me to remember wtf is going on over the course of three years!

The audiobooks for Abercrombie's books are all done by Steven Pacey and are fantastic, highly recommended by someone who doesn't really dabble with that format much (me!).

Still slacking off on the reading front, going to blame Covid cause fuck that guy.

  11. Up to Ultimate Six in USM, Trevor Hairsine's Spidey really highlights what a great job Bagley does of making him look like a kid in a suit cause here he looks a good deal older.

Still enjoying the run, Pete's just met Black Cat in the main title and is suffering through all kinds of teenage angst.  Interesting to see just how how Bill Jemas' involvement was early on.

The first thirty or so issues of Ultimate Spiderman are great, and you still get the occasional nifty one spread through the increasingly meh rest of it after that.

I wish I'd read this before buying the rest of USM, oh well....!
