  1. thanks for all the kind words and for puting me on your list RED.

I was recently approached to make a book for a sci-fi channel film http://shorelineentertainment.com/movies/PestControl.html . It took be nearly 70 hours to carve this particular book primarily due to the need to first carve the glyphs and then manuver around them which was next to impossible. I painted the glyphs with a red egg tempera and guilded the wood. He wanted the book right away so I was unable to put additional coats of gold leaf.

  2. wonderful post Mark. I was a bit miffed about a few of the Azzarello's run issues myself. The Freezes over story was just a throw away, sad.

On another note the death of the dog from doglick(john's short fling) put an extra burden on the town due to its central role in drawing vistors to their porn site.

  3. Heck, you can take a physics class at the University of Minnesota about comic book heroes. I have seen Maus and the Watchman in my University's book store required for popular literature classes.

His book is about to be published released in September.

At the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, James Kakalios, a physics professor, uses superheroes to teach science in a class nicknamed Everything I Know of Science, I Learnt From Reading Comic Books.

"It's a very sneaky course," Kakalios said. "I'm getting the students to eat their spinach by hiding it in a superhero ice-cream sundae."

Kakalios first brought comic books into his classroom in 1993. On an introductory physics exam he posed a question about the death of Spider-Man's onetime girlfriend Gwen Stacey.

Hurled from the top of a New York City bridge by the evil Green Goblin, Stacey died in Spider-Man's web as the hero tried to save her. The writers later attributed her death to the "shock of the fall," an explanation that left many readers mystified.

"Her fall is basically a standard problem that we would ask on an exam: If you fall 90 meters [295 feet] with an initial velocity of zero, how fast are you going at the bottom?" Kakalios said.

The answer removed any doubt about the cause of Stacey's death. She was falling at roughly 95 miles an hour (153 kilometers) when she hit the web. The impact on her body would have been 10 to 20 times the force of gravity. That proved the cause of death to be a neck snap when Spider-Man caught Stacey in his webbing.

    Electromagnetism

While comic book fans have long argued over who the most powerful superhero is, Weinberg says there's no doubt about who is the most formidable villain.

"Without question, Magneto—the mutant who controls the power of magnetism [in the X-Men series]—is the most powerful villain in comics," Weinberg said. "Electromagnetism is the most powerful of the four basic forces of the universe."

But Magneto rarely uses his superpowers to cause maximum damage. Theoretically, everything on Earth that involves electricity falls under his influence. Instead, Magneto generally uses his powers to do things like manipulating the iron content of blood to establish mind control over others.

Similarly, Weinberg said, the powers of many superheroes are not put to optimum use or even used logically.

"Imagine you were driving in your car one day, and a meteor crashed in a nearby field, and inside that rocket was a child with superhuman powers," he said.

"What would you do? Announce to the world that life existed on another planet and that space travel was possible? Or would you take the child home, keep his origin a secret, and raise him to be some sort of flying policeman with a big s on his shirt?"

  4. At least you dont seem to have any difficulty getting the stuff you want - so be glad about that.....

I am very glad of that, but now I have another question. I'm fairly broke at the moment, and I'm looking for any Hellblazer I can find on ebay, etc. Around about what issue #'s are the best ones to read? Usually you find them here and there with #81, #202, etc. Any recommendations?

I'd go with anything between 40-70. You should check frequently on ebay for buy it now auctions every once and a while one will pop up with a fantastic run but they go quick.

All his engines is a great new Hardcover graphic novel for Hellblazer one of the strongest stories in recent years.

  5. Piranha books made some fantastic comics Gregory comes to mind. I had Stuck Rubber Baby. My local comic store went out of business and all the graphic novels were 75 percent off so i picked up a wide assortment of titles.

How many people have read Marshal Law or anything my Richard Sala? Richard Sala's world reminds me of Sin city without the ninja's and prostitutes.

  6. Wow, those paintings are gigantic. I think Hellblazer will have some interesting covers on the horizon. I like the crumpled paper effect he uses in his artwork. His artwork is very distinctive and should set Hellblazer apart from everything else on the rack.

  7. I didn't like the way Kirkman turned Allen into a bumbling idiot when he'd always been a fairly intelligent (if boring) character before.

I will, of course, be interested to see where this takes his kids - hopefully Kirkman will keep them around so we can see how all this shit affects them.

Allen just about reached his breaking point. We are sure running out of kids that is for sure. My least favorite child is Rick's kid, i was sort of hoping he would die form the gunshot. There are few ticking time bombs waiting to go off that is for sure Otis, PAtricia and now it would appear Tyreese may be taking an interest in the new vistor which Carol is not very keen on. The comics is like an on going soap opera.

  8. I've been working on a mural based on Eric Andersons fantastic film and book paintings.

Anyway, the bathroom was painted with a faux bikini and misty blue and the map area an atomic puke. I executed the Rushmore and Royal sections in liquid water colors and gouache. The Chuck Dugan and Life Aquatic sections were done in gouche. I added a few of my own Eric Anderson inspired paintings as well to help fill some of the space. I probably enjoyed creating a oceanic scene based on Chuck Dugan and the Life Aquatic the most.

  9. Can't stand ninja?

    Dropping 100 Bullets?

    What the fuck?

    I concur. Ninjas are awesome.

Add me to the chorus of "What the fuck?!" on this one. Love me some Ninja, and 100 Bullets is aces.

Amen. I mean, it's 100 Bullets! All it needs are some ninjas, and it'll be the best comic to come around in the past ten years!

Unless you're dropping the monthly for the trades. In which case, I applaude your effort for trying to read that damned book in a monthly format.

I just felt the story line is going no where after about 60 issues. Besides, i needed to make space for my Transmetropolitan comics. I can only bring one box of comics and 100 bullets just had to go.

  10. Can't stand ninja?

    Dropping 100 Bullets?

    What the fuck?

    I concur. Ninjas are awesome.

Add me to the chorus of "What the fuck?!" on this one. Love me some Ninja, and 100 Bullets is aces.

I used to live in Japan and I had these two idiot ninja freak friends who went looking for a school of ninjitsu. I felt like a total idiot as we asked directions to this place. The local japanese thought it was just a big joke like myself. They would just laugh and point in the general direction. I left them and went looking around the town. A lot of those schools won't allow white people to train anyway. I know there was a famous defensive arts school in my district that Steven Segal attended but no longer allowed foreigners. A lot of places have signs for no foreigners allowed.

I guess Hellblazer needs some hot ninja women to raise sales. In the immortal words of my idiot friend on the way to this place, "what if everyone in our building were ninja's?......pause....Even the Girls?

  11. Anyone pick up issue 20 this week? The issue seemed to be a bridge for bigger things to come plus the party thins out yet again. the last page had the characters thus far introduced and it said that Patricia Otit's bleeding heart girlfiend actually had a crush on Thomas the seriel killer. I just thought she let him go because she thought it was wrong to kill him. She is a ticking time bomb now that she's been ostracized from group.

  12. In the last six months, Y: The Last Man has featured the holy trinity of ninjas, pirates, and lesbians. This officially makes it Great. ;)

Yeah, the writing isn't bad either. There've been a few minor lulls in the story, but on the whole it's been excellent throughout, and as Josh observes, it's gratifyingly easy to pick up the story mid-point - it's very accessible. Definitely recommended.

Those ninja's just about ended me collecting the pirates pulled me back in. The first 13 issues are amazing. The comic is much like film and the art is a bit lacking along withe some of of the newer covers.

I personally would go for Fables for Y the last man.

  13. Hahahaha  yes and yes.....

lyra, you're in for a treat with All His Engines. Do check back and let us know how you liked it.

I've heard quite a few good things about it on the board, i can't wait. Hellblazer has been on fire the as of late the artwork and stories just keep improving. Except for Tim being let go Hellblazer is about as good as it ever was. Just need to call DC to make sure my subscription doesn't run out. I think i am going to stick with Hellblazer, Y Last man and drop 100 bullets and add Fables. I was about to drop Y the last man, i can't stand anything with ninja's.

  14. Oooh, you're in for a real treat with AHE - defiantely one of the best Hellblazer stories in the past 10 years...

Hellblazer annual #1 is a great read... pity they didn't make more of those.

It really is pity there are no other issues like Annual 1. I was quite disappointed by the Hellblazer special 1. They should do annual each year for one of John's notorious ancestors.

  15. I might be moving out to the middle of nowhere to teach industrial art and need to decide which of my Hellblazer issues are coming with me. I'd love to bring the full run but space is an issue. Which story lines do think i should bring.

I'm thinking about from issues 40-70, hard time and the recent storyline.

  16. The reason i began to collect Hellblazer was my local comic store had them for 50 cents a piece. I just about completed the 1-40 run and collected from that point on. DC really should think about releasing a phonebook sized black and white collection of Hellblazer like marvel is doing with many of its silver aged titles. Hellblazer has enough issues in its run to justify it.

Sorry to hear that many of the trade paperbacks are not printed in German. The Watchman isn't even available in TPB in Argentina.
