  1. "I can understand James' concern about the "three issues in, John's got as far as Watford Gap and is about to stop at a service station for an overpriced Burger King. Next issue, Glasgow!"

Don't you people know that everything happens on the way there?!

I'm not concerned as long as there is lots of characterization and good, penetrating dialogue.

  2. It's nearly the heart of Winter here in Michigan, U.S.A. A place readily known for some frigid Winter temp. and storms.

I wear jeans or dress pants, a long sleeve shirt/sweater/turtleneck, dress shoes, and either my leather jacket or trenchcoat. Nothing outrageous to keep warm.

Of course, I've lived my whole life in the Northern part of North America, so I'm very well used to the cold weather.

  3. I've heard of a few of the names, especially John Conyers, which was what really prompted my sarcastic remark to Red.

Let me just say that my pro-Capitalist, Conservative Republican, Catholic cousin is a big fan of John Conyers.

He's not really someone who would appeal to a Right-Winger, but his policies are certainly far enough from the "radical fringe" that they appease the Conservatives.

  4. Maybe it's best that you never got around to dating her. Will make it a lot easier to get over her in the long run.

Is there any reason why you can't stay in touch with this girl, leave your options open with her?

If the guy really is a dick, chances are she'll outgrow him eventually. Chances are even stronger that he'll eventually really hurt her, and if you're that close friend she can confide in, who is there for her, maybe as she gets over him, she'll find the qualities in you that make you actually worth dating.

But, do not live your life waiting on her! You're young, check out the scene, see who else might be out there for you. Stay close as a friend, keeping options open, but far enough away that you're keeping a clear head about it all. You might find someone even better for you who is ready for you and forget all about this other girl.

  5.

Firstly, a lot of the discussion in this thread seemed to revolve around, "Constantine can't really be that bad of an adaptation of the comic!", to which we reply, hell yeah, this movie sucks ass as an adaptation of "Hellblazer".

Now, many of us did seperate the movie from the comic. This is much more divided as some people actually like the movie on its own, while others of us still think it's crap even if it was called "Hellwaker" and starred some guy named "Pat Simmonds".

While even more others of us decided that it's ok if you're looking for a good action movie with occult overtones, but is hardly an excellent movie plot, dialogue, and character-wise (regardless of it was based on a comic, a novel, a video game, a late night drunken reverie by the writer, or what have you).

  6. I can't think of the name off the top of my head, but the title you're think of is being published by Dark Horse and it's a Vatican murder mystery.

"followed him onto the prestige Spawn yoke (which was rubbish) then to Werewolf By Night (which was aces) "

I was pretty sure Jenkins wrote these two books before H.B.

I like the original "Sentry" mini a lot, but didn't even care enough to pick up the new one. I heard it is being very strongly controlled by the Marvel editors, perhaps even plotted by one.

  7. Ah, hell, Slick! This is creepy! I just got a shiver up my spine when I read this:

"I had a similar experience last year . I hadn't slept in over 40 hours and had crashed . About two hours into my sleep I became half-awake and afraid . I felt what pure evil . My bedroom door opened up and I yelled NO! I then went back to sleep . When I woke up I thought it was a dream till I noticed the bedroom door was open . I have been anal about shutting it since I was very small."

One night, it was in Feb of 2003 actually, I was laying in bed in the dark. I wasn't asleep yet. I was going through a lot of bad personal shite involving Terri, my girlfriend. I hear my bedroom door, it sounds like the doorknob is turning, maybe. I yell out, "Who is it?" No answer. "Terri, is that you?" I had a feeling that it was Terri coming to visit me, even though it was like 4 in the morning. All of a sudden the door opens by itself, and I get this really awful feeling of dread. I just freeze in fear. "Hello? Terri, is that you? What are you doing?" No answer, there's no one there. I turn on my light above my bed. There's no one there.

This has never happened before or since. My door closes tightly and I can't explain what happened.

I remember I called Terri's cell-phone, she had it off, and left a message about the Devil coming to get me, or something like that.

  8. I feel asleep very late last night.

Late last night, I was in my room. I kept hearing noises, sounding like they were coming from the kitchen. I ignored it, until finally I heard a kitchen chair move. I thought someone was in the house! No one was anywhere around.

    Weird!

  9. This is changing the topic now:

" but no cigarette ad is going to convince me to start smoking if I'm a strident non-smoker. I mean I loved Benson & Hedges ads as a teenager -- I thought they were beautiful and artistic and really well done -- but seeing them in magazines and on billboards didn't convince me to try smoking. I think election ads are about the same. If you're already interested in voting and in the electoral and political process, an ad might influence you, but if you don't give a crap, I can't see a simple ad (especially a bad one) having the power to change your mind."

Don't underestimate the power of the "ad". There's a reason these companies are spending SO MUCH DAMN MONEY on them all the time!

Today, smoking has changed drastically. It's not really "cool" to smoke anymore. You don't see commercials for cigarettes anymore, because they're deadly. You now have annoying teenagers telling us NOT to smoke.

But, remember that so many of these adults who smoke today are smoking because they started when they were teenagers, when it was cool to smoke. Sure, it's peer pressure that made most of them start, but why was smoking so cool? Because EVERYONE was smoking EVERYWHERE! Movies and TV shows were loaded down with people smoking, ads featured manly men smoking, etc.

It certainly had a big influence on a few generations.

  10. "Cuz then I'd be reminded of that CSI episode where this huge chick killed a man by having sex with him.. It was damn near hilariouse."

Ah, but what a way to go, eh?

See, I'm lucky in that I'm so small, so I can still have a hot chick who's just heavy enough to do me in.

  11. As people already said, every comic book adaptation was at least immersed in the comic book world of the character they used. They might've not done everything right and it might've come across wrong, but at the end of the day D.D. was still Matt Murdoch:The blind lawyer who saw his father get killed by the mafia for not throwing a fight, got blinded, and put on a red suit to seek vengeance.

And, if you haven't even read a "Hellblazer" comic book you really can't tell us if we're wrong about "Constantine" being such an abomination as compares to the comic.

Mojo-The figures were posted somewhere around this site a while ago. Adrian knows where to get them.

  12. "Shoot" was actually written shortly before Columbine, but wasn't scheduled to be released until after Columbine, shortly enough after the event that DC decided it wasn't proper.

Yes, school shootings happened before and after Columbine, which is why Ellis chose it as a topic to explore, but the fates had it that a very major school shooting in Columbine did occur at the time around when "Shoot" was scheduled to be released.

I'm sure that had there been another major school massacre which occured around the time "Hard Time" was scheduled to be released, DC would've made the same decision (and I consider "Hard Time" to be a far more interesting story). It wasn't an attack on Warren Ellis or that particular story.

"Conclusion Two: We are so frightened of negative publicity, we don't want the mainstream media to even know we exist. Instead of reaching out to the mainstream, we just want them to leave us alone with our ever-decreasing fan base. Please just leave us our comics, we seem to say. I find the attitude to be one that is slowly but surely bleeding comics to death. Maybe SHOOT wouldn't have been the story we wanted to show to the mainstream, but surely we need to tell them that comics have grown up and can handle controversy. Maybe others don't agree with me, but I am tired of seeing the industry dying because we're afraid to reach out to a mainstream that may well reject us."

DC is a business and they have to make smart business decisions. "Shoot" was a potentially very inflammatory and upsetting story for people mad or hurt by the events at Columbine.

It's like after Sept. 11th, 2001 in America ALL mainstream media outlets put a strict ban on what could or could not be shown as relates to violence of a seeming terrorist nature.

So, to say that comics are immature or can't handle controversy because of "Shoot" is tantamount to saying that Hollywood is infantile and backwards because they didn't release any movies around 9/11 that featured plane hijackings.

You may not agree with the decision and you may side with Warren Ellis, but taking a step back, you have to realize that DC was acting as a business, and I don't believe you can simply say that DC "isn't grown up" because of it.

"What I do disagree with is that they've opted to not put it out in any of the trades that have collected Ellis' HB work. But that they didn't publish the story at the time, I completely understand."

Yeah, man, Talk about a missed marketing ploy! All of us anal "Hellblazer" fans who need to own every J.C. apperance would've had to shell out more bucks to get a Trade full of stories we already own in order to get that one Special Bonus story! DC messed up, badly!

  13. umm...I can't think of any celebrities or anything that would really appeal to my favourite woman's body type.

I like wide, round, soft, full, fatty....I like seeing jiggle!

Not huge or obese or anything like that, but a woman with a nice, good amount of meat on her.

The butt, hips, and thighs are my favourite body parts of a woman, but plump arms and a little bit of a full belly are also very good things.

J-Lo isn't bad, just not my favourite. She's too firm and not quite plump enough.

  14. I've never read any of those Bendis' projects, Mojo.

"After all, Elllis, another writer I eally enjoyed, essentially was censored by the all couragous DC for a story about a school yard shooting. Has anybody actually read Hard Time 50 to Life by steve gerber. The stench of hypocrital appeasement is rife from the managament of DC on that one."

James said what I had to say, and Ellis has forgiven DC and moved on with his career.

  15. New plane scare in Hawaii.

Can't find a new story, yet.

From what I caught on the news, a Mexican-American kept yelling in Mexican something about "being sick, needing medicine", and could not be calmed. He kept going into First Class (which, personally, I believe was his grevious sin), and they say he was going for the cockpit when he was tackled and hogtied by a number of passengers.
