  1. Well, Boomerang's shot him, so it doesn't look good. Would like to see him survive though: having a father who knew about his kid-sidekick status made Robin unique, I think, in the DCU. Could have been plenty of mileage in that concept.

  2. A question for our Indian brethern here: are regional dialects understood in other parts of India? Do they vary much, or is the one language spoken throughout?

I'm off on hols in a couple of weeks to Goa, and I'm hoping that someone can tell me the basic phrases for "thank you", "hello" and "goodbye" and the like.

I know most of the staff at the hotel and around will speak english, but it's only polite to learn a couple of words, really.

  3. Can it possibly be better than that fantasy classic "16 Naked Fairy Chicks"?

"What the fuck have you been buying" were Mrs Atticus's words when she saw the cover of my copy on Saturday morning.

After having a quick look inside, the words "disgusting" & "pornography" were uttered. Along with "those can't possibly be fairies!!"

I managed to make it ok by telling her I hadn't actually bought it, and I blamed Mike Carey, trafficker of filth

  4. That Mike Carey Batman book looks quite good, and lots of Constantine goodness on offer.

There's the Ex Machina tpb which I might buy, just so's I can lend it to a mate of mine whose latent love for comics I'm gradually encouraging through tpbs (got him caught up on 100 Bullets, Ellis's Stormwatch & Authority and Queen & Country so far - HB & Preacher still to come  )

But anyway, words cannot express how much in love I am with that Green Arrow cover. That is one beautiful piece of artwork. And is that Mia in Speedy's outfit?

  5. For the Scots: How common is the kilt?

Getting more and more common now.

It used to be only worn, in the most of Scotland anyway, on really formal occasions (weddings, black tie do's etc), but you see quite a few of them certainly around Glasgow now. Being worn much more casually now, with hiking boots rather than highly polished brogues, the customary big thick socks, and just a plain shirt or t-shirt.

I've worn one in the past (very comfortable, cool in the summer, warm in the winter), and I would certainly wear one regularly (even in London)if:

    a) I had better legs, and

    b) they weren't so expensive.

A made-to-measure kilt will set you back around £500, but you can sometimes pick an ex-hire one up to your size for around £200.

My brother has a couple and he wears one to work quite often in Glasgow. With a tank-top to show off his tattoos. But then he is a hairdresser and prone to flamboyance (and no, he's not gay, before anyone asks/jokes).

  6. On the Viggo thing, I've noticed that when men as well as women find a man attractive, it's because the man embodies things that men think make a good man. In Viggo's case it's the strong silent thing.

Yeah, what's them deal with the strong, silent thing, for guys? I get strong, but silent? Why?

Because we like to think that we're carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders, but doing it without a whiff of complaint, because - ahem - a man's gotta do whatta a man's gotta do (apologies to Gary Cooper fans). Cos that's how noble and selfless we are. Or like to think we are. When we're drunk. And moaning about everything we have to do.

  7. Just so you guys don't feel as if you're just talking amongst yourselves, I'll chip in with my support for the Red Sox.

I know fuck all about baseball, but the only guy I ever knew from St Louis was a fucking moaning, hypochondriac, pathetic arsehole wimp excuse for a man (grow a fucking backbone, Jeremiah, wherever you are).

    So, YAY RED SOX!!!

Oh, didn't Sam Malone play for the Red Sox? One more reason if that's the case.

  8. Just read this on MSN:

"LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - Veteran disc jockey and broadcaster John Peel has died in Peru while on holiday in the ancient Inca city of Cuzco, his employer the BBC and the British embassy say.

"He passed away. We don't have any details. We received a phone call at 4 a.m. from his brother to inform us," said Jonathan Clare, an embassy official in Lima.

The BBC in London said on Tuesday Peel was on a working holiday in Cuzco with his wife, Sheila. There was no other comment from the BBC.

Peel, born in 1939, was one of the country's original pirate radio disc jockeys in the 1960s, broadcasting from ships anchored just outside British waters that won huge followings. Peel was his assumed "pirate" name.

In the late 1970s he championed punk rock to the consternation of many of his radio contemporaries who were still playing rock supergroups -- and were convinced the new music fad would never have any real impact.

Peel -- an authority on independent music -- was honoured with an Order of the British Empire."

Non-brits may not know it, but John Peel was probably responsible for most of the successes of the independent music industry in this country.

A great man, he will be missed.

  9. And does any DC superheroe stuff cross over? Con-job's had dealings with Swampy, of course, could he also run into, say, Superman?

Well, Zatanna is fairly well established in both John's "reality" and a recurring occasional member of the JLA, so I'd say it's definitely within the realms of possibility that he could run into Supes. That would shit ol' Kal-el up - he fucking hates magic, doesn't he? Can't deal with that sort of shit. That would be a laugh actually.

But still, I like the fact that HB plays a bit loosely with DCU & Vertigo continuity. Lucifer turned up for a panel in "Staring at the Wall" didn't he?
