  1. Strangely, never actually been arrested, but was stopped by the police for trying to steal one of those big posters advertising the Batman movie from a bus shelter, y'know the one just with the black & yellow chest plate, no lettering apart from the release date (shows you how long ago it was, I was 18). Classy poster, and huge too.

Luckily, when the polis asked for my details, including where I worked, it turned out one of them was friendly with a guy from my office. They let us off in the end, (much to the amusement of the guy in my office when he found out about it) but unfortunately we didn't get the poster.

Fair enough though, 'cos between me, my brother, and my mates, that was about the only one left in town. We'd been stealing them to order for about the previous two weeks from every possible bus shelter we could find. Made a few bucks out of it too.

  2. This is a bit of a spin off from the "Cheer up Pooka" thread, but bear with me.

The new Scottish Parliament building opened last week, designed down to the last detail with some wonderful wee touches, including the lifts (elevators to you Yanks).

Anyway, the voice in the lift cars, telling you what floor you're at, going up etc, is apparently provided by Sir Sean Connery. Which to me is the coolest of the cool ("shecond floor; going down, Mish Moneypenny?") but got me thinking:

Who would provide the best voice for your own nation?

After reading the C.U.P. thread, I'd have to say that if all announcements concerning the English were made either by Brian Blessed or Tom Baker then the world would be a happier place.

    Any other thoughts?

  3. My bacon has to be just on the crispy side and no more. Hate soft stringy fat around the edge, but if it's gone a wee bit crispy it's ideal.

A few wee cuts along the edge of the fat stops it curling up too much, then grilled on a lower heat for a longer time seems to get the best balance between crispy-ness and not-shrinking-to-half-its-size-ness.

And then on white bread or toast with a bit of butter.

  4. Yes, I did watch "Man on Fire" last night.

    Is it any good, Tom?

I have a healthy respect for Mr Washington as an actor (not in a gay way, but if any guy was going to turn me then I'm sure I could do a lot worse) and was looking forward to this film. And then I read the shit reviews. Mind you, "Out of Time" got shit reviews and I quite enjoyed that.

  5. I'm sorry I'm so inherently uncool and boring, but Jack & Karen in Will & Grace are just soooo funny.

Karen : [in a luandramat] What is this place? It's pretty.

[starts to tap on a washing machine]

Karen : Where are all the fishes?

Grace : No Karen this is a laundramat, normal people wash their clothes and wear them again.

Karen : Well poor people are just plain clever

    That's funny.

  6. Will & Grace is just one of those shows that I don't get - to the degree that I hate it with a burning passion!  Quirky people just aren't inherently funny, yes, even if they're also gay.  That and the guest stars - everytime I happen to flick it on, there's some stupid fucking singer or movie star gurning at the camera.  Oh it's Madonna!  Wow!

    Er...yeah...anyway....

To be fair, Madonna's guest appearance was one of the worst, but the Kevin Bacon cameo was hilarious, the Gene Wilder recurring character is genius and they work far more often than they don't. If it wasn't for Jack & Karen the show would indeed be pants, but the two of them make it.

But again, you either like it or you don't I suppose.

  7. Superman 2 is still up there as one of the best Superhero movies ever made.

So many great bits, but in honour of Reeves death, how about when he walks back into the diner after getting his powers back....?

Fucking great bit when he kicks that redneck's arse. Supes 2 was the best of the bunch, easily (still a bit strange though to hear Terence Stamp doing the voice of Jor-El in Smallville though)

    Anyway.

I was gutted this morning to read the news. A true hero, Christopher Reeve will be sadly missed. His courage in the face of his paralysis, while I'm sure typical for a great number of people in a similar situation, was always something that demanded respect and provided inspiration to millions round the world.

He will be sorely missed. RIP.

  8. I was out shopping a few weeks ago, and in House of Fraser in Bluewater they had stacks of Christmas decoration out for sale, and this was THE FUCKING MIDDLE OF FUCKING SEPTEMBER!

But Christmas, love it - when else do you get a chance to eat & drink all day without feeling guilty. And have 40 little sausages wrapped in bacon for no reason other than you like them. yes. lovely.

  9. Andy Gray? Can't see it myself, don't know how much respect he'd command as a manager. I would much prefer Strachan in the hot seat, but according to the radio this afternoon the SFA have confirmed that Vogts WON'T be sacked, even if we get gubbed my Moldova. Obviously they can't afford to pay him off.

  10. Did anyone else happen to catch QI last night?

Had to be one of the funniest episodes ever. When Stephen Fry started on about his prep school tailor, I was cracking up.

    Quality quality programme.

Friday night TV has just recently became watchable again:

    West Wing

Will & Grace (mainstream stuff, I know, but it makes me laugh my socks off)

    Green Wing

    QI

And Have I Got News For You starts again this Friday.

Oh, and by-the-by, Spooks starts again tonight! Yay!!

  11. Speaking of shite, Scotland were muck against Norway.  Only caught the highlights for that one..............

Oh, and Robbie Savage, could you not try and clean yourself up for tele mate ?

There were highlights of the Scotland match John? Was that between the adverts?

Anyway, I've been saying for a while that Vogts should be given the time that his contract allows to turn the Scottish team round. I mean, after all, we're only Scotland, it's not as if during the remainder of his term we'd be missing out on winning something! Of course we're pish, but if he says it'll take 5 years to turn the team around, he should have the 5 years. Our footballing stock is the poorest it's ever been, we have very few players coming through that are (or could be) of international class, and between Vogts & Bonhof they're trying to change that from youth level up. It's the only way to improve our fortunes.

However, after the weekend's results I'm inclined to change my mind. Our squad has actually got worse since Vogts took over, and given that the U21's lost against Norway on Friday night there doesn't seem any prospect for an improvement during the remainder of Vogts' contract.

Sack Vogts if we don't improve on Wednesday night against Moldova, get Strachan in, use the remaining World Cup qualifiers to improve the team, and target the Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Oh, and Savage was such a twat as a pundit on Saturday. He's got a face only a mother could love, and a father could kick for a fortnight.

  12. I'm pretty sure that Iraq has been on the Foriegn Office's list of places they advise against visiting for some time.

A wee quick check reveals this, from fco.gov.uk :

"We advise against all but essential travel to Iraq. The security situation is dangerous and there continue to be widespread outbreaks of violence. Even essential travel to Iraq should be delayed, if possible.

The threat to British nationals remains high. Since the beginning of March 2004, 11 British nationals have been killed and several others seriously injured in terrorist incidents. Terrorists and insurgents continue to target British, international and other interests in Iraq. Targets include hotels where British and other nationals may stay, as well as civilian vehicles and aircraft."

No idea how long that advice has been there for, but I don't think they ever lifted the warnings from just after the Gulf War 2.0

  13. Just heard on the news that the British hostage in Iraq, Ken Bigley, has been executed.

Now, while this is a tragedy for his family, and I'm sure the whole ordeal has been terrible for them (and him), there are a few points that have really been getting on my nerves (and I'm sorry if this seems a bit hard hearted, but I'm in a pish mood today and really I don't give a fuck):

    1. The news has been saying, since the kidnap first came to light, that no-one can understand the anguish that his family are going through. I'm sorry? Is he the first person to be taken like this? Is he fuck, there a families across the US & Europe that have had to deal with this trauma already. I just feel that the UK news has been forgetting that, and it belittles the pain felt by previous victim's families.

    2. What did his family really expect Tony Blair to do? This country, along with most of the world, has a policy of not giving in to kidnappers' demands in these cases. But his brother's on TV, saying that the government aren't doing enough, when they are using all the diplomatic pressure they can. You just can't give in to their demands or it just encourages further kidnappings. And OK, you might say I'd be singing a different tune if it was my family, but it's not, so I can.

    3. The only people who are in Iraq for the good of Iraqis are the aid workers. Everyone else is either sent there (soldiers) or they're there to make a fast buck (like Mr Bigley). Everyone knows that it is a very dangerous place, and these people go over there knowing the risks, but decide it's worth the risk because of the sums of cash involved. They're not doing it out of some altruistic attempt to help the poor impoverished Iraqis, it's all about cash vs risk. And this time Mr Bigley lost.
