  1. there's something about the look and feel of things when you're done that says "Mission Accomplished" and makes you feel like you did something worth a fuck (other than sit around all day and smoke dope and play Metal Gear Solid).

Couldnt agree more - that reminds me - I need to water my new planting....grasses....phormiums....big gunnera-type things.

Snap. Do we need a cooking thread?

I think there is one somewhere - but we could always start another one!

  2. I've got beer on for tonight

but not to get drunk - just a tad loaded

A little tipsy? And did it happen?

I got to taste sake at the office party. One teeny weeny cup. But it was nice.

    URGH! Sake sucks. :D

    ---------

I drink alone a lot - dont really see it as a problem as Im not keeping a bottle by my bed or anything....just a glass or two in the evening..

  3. Adorwable pussies Pooks - I love the way the second one looks like he/she needs glasses to read the newspaper!

Nowt much going on with me at the moment - I feel supremely calm again. Possibly due to the prozac, possibly due to, well just feeling quite chilled about life.

I cant get enough of the garden at the moment - gardening and cooking - I feel like I finally 'get' the two pursuits, and find them both supremely satisfying in an almost zen-like way.

  4. I like it that you have a definite ceremony at the end of a year's mourning Gen - we dont seem to have that in the UK...I think if one was Catholic you might, but Im not sure...

I think having formalised rituals helps put death in context and makes you feel part of something and not so alone in grief - if that makes sense?

  5. I fetish* blond men. Preferably chain-smoking British blond men who wear trenchcoats. And do occulty things.

    *I realise it's not a verb.

Which reminds me - I must (off-topic, sorry) just say before I forget - Paul Bettany as John Constantine - perfect casting? I think so)

OK, back to immigrant bashing. :D

  6. I've really bonded with my Dad since my Mum died so we went out for a lovely pub lunch and then decamped to a local plant nursery where we went mad and bought loads of plants! It was heavenly.

Oh, and Sickboyfilms' comment 'I'm glad mines dead, [over-used word] saved me £1.50 a year since 1997.' - sad, but very funny.

  7. I've been told it's my hair so I voted 'hair'. My mind is sick and twisted at the best of times, as is my sense of humour, so we wont go there. I've been told I've got nice eyes but I only think thats true when they're plastered in make-up and you dont want to look too closely or you'll see the wrinkles....hee hee...

  8. This is the same friend who backed out 3x the last time he wanted to move into an apartment.

Why did he back out? that might be the key to what the problem is?

kinki - yesterday, 15 June was my mom's first death anniversary

so there were tons of people at the house....

if goblin can read this - we had ubod, fresh and fried

which is made from the bark of the coconut tree. It was good.

And wonderful shrimps, pancit (a noodle dish), barbeque

(grilled pork skewered on a stick), lechon (roast pig),

fish and chips (the dip was to die for), a very hot dish

i dont know the English equivalent - its called laing

and pinangat (crabs cooked in coconut milk, with gabi- a root crop)

    and its very very spicy.

Sounds like a wonderful feast Gen - and your mum would have been proud of so many people gathering together in her honour - maybe I will do the same next January.

Have a good weekend, whatever you decide to do...

  9. Going back to the question about learning the native language etc when you move to a country - what do you guys think someone should have to do when they move to the UK (or anywhere for that matter)? I think they should -

    a/ learn the language

b/swear to uphold the laws of the land

c/pay their dues like the rest of us, and not just assume they can use our resources (welfare state) in an unlimited way without contributing something back.

My Dad reckons they should swear allegiance to the Queen and be prepared to join the armed forces of this country if necessary, but Im not sure about that....

  10. I want to know. Is there any difference to my posts? (You can pm me on this. )

i miss my mom terribly but i know she's okay where she is.

No I cant see much of a difference Gen - your posts are still coherant, well written and poetic. Sometimes you need to get sloshed - it's necessary.

I miss my mum too - but likewise I know she's OK.

  11. kinki - Alan Rickman did a cameo - starred in a music video

    with this beautiful singer -

    and they did the Tango.

Hmmmm sounds yummy...Alan Rickman is definitely someone I could have a serious crush on. actually I have had a crush on him in the past - but it never lasts very long - he is VERY sexy in the Harry Potter films.

    Hmmm. a whole band, huh?

Never was mad for an entire bad before

no special one there? i always did ...

Yep, a whole band. I am always madder on one member or another at any one time, but always love them all - more as time goes on actually. One could say they are my longest standing crushes - since 1981 in fact.

  12. even such archetypally-British customs/institutions as the ones Kinki mentions didn't develop in an isolationist vacuum.

Which of course is interesting, and makes any form of argument such as the one I started with (British culture being eroded by over capitulation to Muslim sensitivities etc) completely futile.
