  1. Kinki started a thread about multiculturalism and talked about the Fof's from Fofed and all their little fofings determined to stay in there fofcieties and speak fofern and worship their pagan god Fofethulhu.

Whatever the fof you're on, Lyra, can I have some please? :D

Oh and Christian, even if I DID dream about you fofing the fof out of Jay, I wouldnt fofing tell you!

OK I am now officially sick of the word 'fof'.

  2. OK, I want firstly to say Im sorry if my arguments seem a little woolly round the edges. I may not be the most articulate of writers but I am grateful to all you guys for assisting me in finding my way through this thorny issue.

    As Red says

The MAIN problem is not the immigrants/asylum seekers etc, it's our racist and imperialist societies.

And this, for me at least, sums up the whole argument neatly. Other comments about the passage of time creating a more integrated society, as minority groups become more accepted into the general culture, are interesting.

I feel ashamed that I have been partly sucked into this paranoia and mistrust of the Asian (Pakistani/Indian) community and can only put it down to being brainwashed by the current media obsession with anti-muslim sentiment. And I apologise if I come across as racist. I dont mean to and in my daily dealings with people I like to think I treat every individual I come across with equal respect.

Oh and with regard to Saudi Arabia I know that it is a very rich, insular society that still executes people and chops your hands off if you've robbed someone. Or am I wrong about the last part? I guess what Christian meant by asking me what I thought of Saudi was 'is that REALLY what you want each nation state to be?' - isolated and pure.

No it isnt. I love walking in a city amongst all different nationalities, as he cited as an example of 'interconnectedness'. I love all the different types of food you get with different groups...and the other vibrant ways all these groups contribute to our culture.

I just dont want what is regarded as the 'best' of British culture to get forgotten about, is all.

  3. Do you normally have a crush going Gen? If so, I wonder whats happened to make you not able to summon one up?

Me, I cant exist without a crush of some sort going on somewhere - whether in reality or in my head for some celeb or pop star or whatever. I feel empty without one. Pathetic really. :D

  4. What's wrong with immigrants not integrating into British culture?

Because society becomes more and more fractured and paranoid as different racial/national groups stick to their own areas. 'We dont trust them and they dont trust us' kind of mentality.

James wrote that integration is the only answer to racism and I'd agree with that.

What exactly is meant by integration here?

It is an issue of the lack of integration of the Muslim community I think or at least the British perception of the Muslim community.

Yes, I agree. The issue most people seem to have is with the Muslim community and the perceived 'power' they are accumulating. White people feel threatened by them maybe?

    Kinki when you wrote

Not to put too fine a point on it, I feel our rich cultural history is being put at risk from the politically correct.
What exactly do you mean? Do have examples of the politically correct denigrating our cultural history in favour of foriegn cultures?

Im afraid only what I have read in the media (maybe therewith lies the problem - it's mainly media hyped paranoia) but it is the usual fare of doing stuff so as not to offend Muslims and sidelining Christian ceremonies/festivals. Sorry I cant be more specific.

  5. ANyway, i should clarify.

Coralys, the just fof(for) guys tittle was just meant as a warning, because i knew some of the female members of the forum might have found the contents of my drunken ramblings a bit offensive...but i was not meant to determine wich forum members could or could not read the thread

I couldn't see anything in it that would be particularly offensive to any members of this forum.

no, I mean I read Jon's story and just thought, 'oh a bloke story'...it's no dirtier than half (actually most) of the stuff that constitutes thoughts in my own head.

But on a serious-er note. part of the reason I've been absent for a bit was I did feel a bit male dominated all of a sudden (usually I dont mind this  ) and didnt feel I could join in much as it was all about football or basketball or whatever...

But I guess the onus is on us girls to create more girly threads - well not about flower arranging or anything, but more girl-friendly stuff.

I dont wish to sound like Im trying to divide the forum, far from it. But I like this place and just wanted to get that off me chest. Hope you dont mind.

  6. On the face of it Multi-culturalism is a wonderful idea and can work

How? Are there instances where it HAS worked, and if so, how? I think Josh said something about San Francisco working well multiculturally. Why is that?

but when you look at what is happening in GErmany where two serperate societies are emerging it can make you pause. Until recently, Germany has really not forced new immigrants to learn the language and allowed them to set up seperate state sanctioned schools creating an insular community that cannot take part in a larger German society. The youths and their parents can often only find menial jobs due to lack of language skills.

I find what is happening to England and France ironic since their former empires are coming home.

I thought France was quite strict about keeping France 'French'? Does Germany now force immigrants to learn German and take part in wider German society. And if so, is this a good thing? I think it is.

  7. Oh erm, if we havn't mention, cristian, inca and i are ladys.

Yes, and my other car is a Lamborghini.

Go on admit it you like it when we watch. ;)

Well, maybe I do....BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT.

  8. the resentment when wealthy Asian families start moving into established suburbs.

Do the wealthy Asian families bring negative changes, and if so, what are they?

And, do they bring any positive changes?

OK this is going to sound awful, but these families keep themselves to themselves and dont really make an effort to integrate, and my worry is that these areas will eventually become ghettos, wealthy ghettos, but ghettos all the same.

On the positive side, they do up the houses very well.

Sorry, I should have commented on this before, but I don't see the connection between this...

Now, I dont regard myself as a BNP voting bigot, but there is something about the current state of affairs which bothers me. And Im not sure what it is. Maybe it's the post 9/11 pussyfooting round Muslims so as to not offend them. Maybe there's something of truth in the UK being a 'soft touch'.

    And this...

I dont know exactly, but I dont like the way things seem to be going - ie; the idea of 'them' and 'us', the resentment when wealthy Asian families start moving into established suburbs.

Surely the latter is the fault of bigoted whites and nothing to do with immigration laws at all? Also, I would imagine that any 'immigrants' that have shitloads of money are probably already well-established in Britain and probably second- or third-generation businessmen?

Yes, agreed, they are probably well established in this country and yes, when I said 'them and us' I DID mean the attitude of bigoted white people. But when regular people (like my father for god's sake, who is usually tolerant to a fault) start expressing what are termed as 'racist' opinions there is SURELY something rotten in the State of Denmark, metaphorically speaking. Something wrong with the immigration laws, something wrong with us being 'soft' on non-English speakers, and something wrong with marginalising people for wanting to have Carol Concerts in school, or wanting to hang an English flag, or promoting the UK as primarily a Christian country. Not to put too fine a point on it, I feel our rich cultural history is being put at risk from the politically correct.

  9. OK, I know you're all going to ignore this and me because I've not been around :D  , but I cant very well post this sort of topic on the David Sylvian appreciation forum Im also a member of, so here goes.

Disclaimer; I do not regard myself as racist.

Right, for some time now I have been wrestling with this problem in my mind. There is no way to dress it up so I wont bother. What do you all think of multi-culturalism? Where I live, the northern UK small city of Preston, there is a sizeable Asian population. As with many such places, there is a degree of integration. But there are some who dont speak English or (for want of a better phrase) attempt to integrate more with 'British' culture.

I dont know exactly, but I dont like the way things seem to be going - ie; the idea of 'them' and 'us', the resentment when wealthy Asian families start moving into established suburbs.

Something came out of a discussion I was having the other day about this issue, ie; that it's not a RACIST issue, but a CULTURAL issue. And I suppose it begs the question. what is culture? What is British culture, and what is its future?

  10. thank you for the welcome back guys - EXCEPT CHRISTIAN! Bah!!! (Oh I knew you were only joking with me :D )

Story of my life this - I flit from one thing to the next - I am very fickle, but I really must make the effort to stick around...you guys really are so..well..NICE.

Dammit I've even semi-forgotten how to post, and John's gone and changed the whole thing anyway! Bugger. :D

  11. OK, ....er...hello again. I've no excuses for my absence, only weird head stuff with my Mum's death, very busy at work...ran out of stuff to say for a bit I guess...but if you'll have me back I'll try and contribute something intelligent from time to time.

  12. Rain ALWAYS seems personal when you're having a fuck up of a day/week/month....

It's raining here too - if that's any comfort, and I dare say Oslo looks a darn sight prettier in the rain than Preston does...

Sorry to hear about your trouble at t'mill Mickey - hope all gets sorted soon.

Red - fingers crossed things get sorted out within the party and everybody's happy....

    ----

I feel shit - no energy - lethargic - I think Im doing too much exercise to try and stave off the ageing process, and as an ironic result I feel about 80 today.

And Im still not sleeping well at all - so I've made an appointment with my doc to see what's wrong - I've never suffered from insomnia before - it's shit - I sympathise with anyone who suffers from it...being permanently knackered is no fun at all...
