  1. Oh my, is this a gorgeous book. Frazer Irving is playing so far above the rim, wow.

Yeah, he went a few levels up from his [really great] Batman Inc. stuff. He's really tapping into all that neat Corbenesque 80's Heavy Metal stuff with his coloring and grimaces.

  2. But that just makes it worse, it makes Yankball a dirty rotten tease. :P ;)

Just joking here, I really have no sporting interest, experience or preference, but I like teasing US sports fans. Though watching Friday Night Lights made Yankball seem compelling and NOT that hard to understand, actually [before watching that show, the whole game seemed just kind of arbitrary to me]. I still find most US sports a bit on the isolationist side, which I feel contributes to the American people usually not being able to really "get"/connect/empathize with other bits of the world, culturally, but that's a whole larger and infinitely more complex discussion.

  3. I really haven't seen "representation crusading" and have found the articles on CA and BC to be pretty much okay, and pretty much opinions of reviewers/essayist that take a critical view that is not pure bashing - some people hold HB to a higher standard [as do I, for the most part] than most other fictions, and some good TV shows lately HAVE shown that you can have an intriguing TV show adaptation, or at least an homage [Hannibal, Supernatural as a homage to Constantine and such, Person of Interest owes a lot to Batman and some classic SF books/movies], so they expect a bit more substance. I'd hardly call that railroading, and there are several STHellers here who probably share similar sentiments [James, Abhimanyu, yours truly...] and think the show is entertaining, but not-quite-up-to-snuff compared to what they feel is possible, even on network TV.

  4. Yeah, I've seen his stand-up, but it doesn't do much for me. Though, I don't even enjoy a lot of Patton Oswalt's nerd-specific stand-up, but he is still in my good graces thanks to his non-nerdy bits. Most of the geeky comics that I enjoy manage to strike a nice balance between the nerdyness and some other, larger points/issues to milk for laughs [brian Posehn, Donald Glover, Oswalt, and on occasion, Stewart Lee can do some pretty geeky material...].

And so as not to be just a completely bloody negative dick here, I'll just say that I find Comedy Central's "The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail" funny at times, and THAT one has some geek/nerdy humor as well [and is being recorded in the back room of a comic book store], so if you haven't seen it, I'd recommend you check it out. You've probably seen all the performers on @midnight already, but here they do short sets of their own material.

  5. Nah, I wouldn't trade places with him. Nor do I consider Breaking Bad to be all that great a TV show, though it was good, very often [i find even Justified superior to it, even though that is also a good but uneven show]. The [after]shows Hardwick makes are pretty much just pandering advertisements [Talking Bad was probably the best of the lot, mostly because there actually WERE things you could talk about regarding that show], where any attempt to talk about the show in a non-gushing, analytical manner is immediately thwarted.

I couldn't really get into @midnight, didn't find it funny the first few times I took a chance on it, but I'm sure it's most likely the best thing he's done on TV so far, just because his main job there ISN'T to service a corporation's property in a bland, inoffensive manner. And, of course, I think there are far funnier comedy shows on CC, though YMMV.

  6. Sinatoro was his [unmade] road movie about America, right?

And yeah, I'm very much intrigued and following Annihilator [Legendary, BTW, is the comics division of Legendary pictures, so it's all most likely just developing pitches for future properties down the line, I guess? Why pay Image, Dark Horse, Vertigo and such, when you can farm your own cult properties with well-known creators?], but the first issue was its best so far. Hope it picks up, I liked the idea of a public domain pulp character that is constantly reinvented for the here and now [especially the bits where they showed with Max Nomax as a 60s Italian fumetti character]. Still, the artwork's crazy good, so it's still a good read.

  7. Daniel Cerone made the mistake of engaging with that chap's twitter account, so it's gotten a little personal - both sides might be secretly happy that they can ride the 'feud' for a little more traffic but it's all very unedifying.

There's a stink of desperation to a lot of the official #saveconstantine tweets, almost come across a little like Chuggers chasing you down the street trying to shove their shitty little clipboard in your face! Half-expecting Cerone to start calling me on the half-hour asking why I haven't watched the latest fucking episode yet. If at any point he endorses some kind of fan campaign ("Send NBC disposable lighters!") you can take it as read that the series is done.

Went to Cerone's twitter, to look for that spat, but got distracted by the aforementioned stink of desperation. I mean, what the man's doing is so very commendable, and I'm sure he's doing it partly out of loyalty to all the jobs [his included] that depend on Constantine, but he really oughta tone it down a notch, this is reaching "doth protest too much" levels.

  8. Episodes 1-6 were, for the most part, quite good, and I'm with you, John, Brutal Rick would make for some great TV, especially if they have him and Daryl or Michonne evolve into leaders of two opposing factions that are at war during the endgame.
