  1. The useless [over-used word] had a tv special on one of the shite channels (7, 9, 10) detailing his struggle to be an actor and showcasing the forthcoming world Hoff tour kicking off (or Hoff) in Sydney soon.

Not surprising for the city that resurrected the Mullet (if it ever went away).

  2. Theres a great second hand book / music shop just round the corner from where I work in Bondi so I've been restocking my shelves with books I already own in the UK. Now re-reading 'Porno' by Irvin Welsh, the sequel to 'Trainspotting' which came out a few years back, theres a hillarious anti-climax with Begbie and Renton at the end.

Welsh is good at writing in the Scottish accent which gets you right in to the characters, I think he owes a lot to 'Last Exit to Brooklyn'.

  3. Slightly belated but sad news that Link Wray the 'inventor of the power chord' died in Copenhagen, Denmark on November 5th.

From his website, "Link is known for his instrumental hit single Rumble. And to quote Uncut magazine, who voted Link #33 of the 100 best guitarist list in the World as the composer of the worlds most threatening instrumental: “The violent intimations of Rumble so struck sensitive late 50s sensibilities that it was banned by many radio stations. Not bad for an instrumental. Rumble will outlive us all”.

Link Wray is known for being the first musician to experiment with the sounds that pioneered rock and roll and punk styles. Link virtually invented fuzz tone by deliberately punching holes in his amplifier speakers. He was also a true pioneer of the use of distortion on instrumental rock recordings."

He has inspired countless artists over the world from including Gallon Drunk, PJ Harvey, The Who, White Stripes, The Cramps and the various Billy Childish groups.

My personal favourite track was 'Deuces Wild'

His official site can be found HERE

  4. The Elvis Costello comparison might be fairly accurate, many Liverpudlians share Irish ancestry (along with Manchester and Birmingham) and like anyone living in London for a long period theres a bit of Mockney in there too.

  5. I was wandering around Sydney the other night and decided to resurrect a Hellblazer fanflic script I had begun a couple of years ago relocating it in my new home city.

One thing I've always wondered is what does Johns accent sound like? He's from Liverpool sure but did he stay scouse or pick up a London twang. (example, I grew up in Middlesbrough then moved South at 16, my accent is fairly neutral but the northern kicks in when I swear)

Any suggestions or clues I've missed from the comics?

Incidentally the Aussie inflection at the end of a sentence that makes a statement sound like a question is getting really fucking annoying.

  6. Nice to see you back Rogan, its been too quiet and ordered in your absinthe.

Tell me , is there much fuss over the Srebrenica massacre in your part of town (like there is in the rest of the world)?

Hey, Sickboy... The Srebrenica thing raised quite a fuss here as well - like picking at a scab, people are once again getting divided, political parties started making and broadcasting documentaries about Serbs being tortured and killed, just so they could justify what most of them (it's the Radical Party, their leader is currently in Hague, and he used to lead paramilitary troops as well) did, and would still gladly do. So, on one hand we have (mostly) fake apologist politicians, who want to go into EU someday, and the extreme right/left who are giving out statements to chill your spine. And the people are, as always, either divided, or stuck in the middle, sick of it all.

Nice one Rogan, I noticed in the UK media there was a day spent lamenting the 10 year anniversary (like they did with Rwanda) and questioning the role of the U.N. and then nothing. No doubt us Brits will be whining about a few bombs in London for the years to come.

  7. Nick Cave - Black Hair

Nick Cave - Oh My Lord

    Nick Cave - Sweetheart Come

Nick Cave - As I Sat Sadly By Her Side

Nick Cave - The Ship Song

You make it 'The Ship Song' and thats a good funeral but who would want to sit near your festering remains listening to the dirge that is 'Black Hair'.

  8. "In My Way" by Elvis Presley

"I may not be here tomorrow

But I'm close beside you today

So lie to me a little, say you love me a lot

And I'll be true to you in my way"

"I Won't Share You" by The Smiths

    and

"Purple People Eater" by Sheb Woolley
