  1. OK, so I'm putting my words into Delano's mouth!

And, who knows?! Maybe he took his Zoloft the morning he did that interview, eh?

You know, you shouldn't joke about people taking drugs.

Especially when using American brand names with respect to a British psychiatric nurse.

  2. But there's no rush !

(Unless your going to go missing on us again Rogie-man ?)

Let's have a week of debate and it'll be easy to set up polls for any that still have debate. I'll sort that out next weekend.

  3. there was a write up on the Constantine panel at Newsarama or Comic Book Resources, and Karen Berger and Azzarello seemed to suggest that the movie really is a very good adaptation of the comic. yeah, right!

To be fair, it's a more than adequate adaptation of Azzarello's Constanteen.

  4. Oh no, meant to edit that one, I'll just pop up there before he finds it.

Now there was a reason I put the link to the Alcohol Tarot up there.

The Emperor / Empress debate is answered therein.

The Emperor is a proud man. He stands dressed in ornate robes a can of lager firmly held in his manly grasp. He is a confident, successful father figure, a true 'Daddy', an accomplished drinker and a profound thinker. He embodies all masculine strengths and symbolises the perceived dominance of man over nature.

Dignified: An extremely strong masculine card, the Emperor is a man of authority and a noble leader. Let the Emperor's spirit manifest in your soul and you will defeat any challenge that is thrust in your path. But remember with power comes responsibility. Your are in control now. You are the Daddy!

The Empress is also known as the Earth Mother or Tarot Mother for she is strong, loving and fertile. Like the Earth Goddesses of ancient times she is in harmony with nature and a symbol of childbirth and reproduction. She knows the mysteries of life and has the answers to many esoteric questions. The Empress is a dominant feminine card that indicates a powerful female influence.

Dignified: Your harvest is about to be reaped, spiritual and material abundance lie in store once the crop has ripened. You are under the protection of the Tarot mother who provides security and promotes growth. This card signifies strong creative potential. Trust your instincts and don't be afraid to try something a little different. Hops, barley, and yeast are gifts from the Earth Mother and when combined give birth to beer. Drink beer and fortify yourself with the Empress's blessing.

Ill dignified: Poverty, sterility, and emotional insecurity are all aspects of the ill-dignified Empress. A possible overbearing female influence that smothers creativity and slows progress. The harvest has been left in the field to rot. Avoid beer it will only bring you sorrow and pain.

    It's Swampy and Abby ennit?

  5. Let James have these ones. They were good.

I'd definitely go for Rich and Chelle as Emperor and Empress. I just can't think of another suitable coupling.

Wouldn't Gabriel do for Judgement, in that he was constantly judging people and his downfall came when god judged him?

  6. I wish I had thruppence for every time I've had to say that Mike is evidently writing for the trade market, and in the absence of a reasonable Compleat Hellblazer strategy (until they come up with Essential DC editions) this is as good a way as any to plug a hole.

  7. Of course, Tim's used a fair few Tarot references, Gemma as The Fool, Fredericks and Josh Wright linked with The Magician.

    Here goes

  8. Yeah but OBviously I mean other images, that issues should be considered banned from this idea.

Such as John & St Stephens Tower (House of Parliament) for The Tower.

Hmmm, the Tim Bradstreet Hellblazer Tarot set ...

  9. Sadly the only person interested in one in London these days is one of those "£20 for the Ferengi bloke's signed photo !" ones.

Mike was at one the other weekend which is intending to expand its comics part next time.

  10. It used to be assumed that when kids went to school the teachers would be what the Latins calls in loco parentis ie they'd be given the respect and be able to discipline children accordingly. Nowadays, it just ain't so.

To be fair, in that America, all your competitiveness no doubt means you HAVE to have the brightest kiddy in class ;-)

  11. I think the locked guy is too much of a one-off.

Yeah, Gabriel is on the Judgement card in traditional decks, so that should've been obvious.

How about Lady Johanna and Kon-Stan-Tyn as the Empress and Emperor,

and then Kit, Zed & Angie as The Lovers (an admitted twist on the usual)

I reckon that apart from Angie & Gemma the only obvious Hellblazer character we're missing is the Demon John - he can be The Joker ;-)

    The Tower could be Ravenscar.

An interesting variation on this would be to get images of John as each of the characters (well The Empress might present a problem) - eg Hanged Man (end of #3)

  12. You see I'm not as fond of Rich.

Your suggestion for Crowley crossed my mind too, but then I thought he's got too much other baggage about him.

A twisted psychological take on Temperance could see Demon Constantine fitting the bill.

  13. I am feeling like death warmed up this week, off work with some sort of throat infection (I like to say that I am coughing like Keanu in Constanteen, because that nicely sums up my misery.), so I begin this thread.

I am listening to the radio and there was just 2 mins silence for the victims of the London bombings. The presenter, Tom Robinson as it happens, followed the silence with Sigur Ros "Svefn-g-englar" which will undoubtedly be on my cremation playlist. Immediately followed by something boppy or "Elegant Chaos" by Julian Cope, I should imagine.

I once went to the funeral of one of my clients who descended into the flames to the sound of "All Around the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix.

And then there's Paul McCartney's toast on the death of Picasso with lyrics, "drink to me, drink to my health, I know I can't drink any more"

So what three songs would you want to play to your mourners ?

  14. I feel like a rant, because education should be at the root of our society.

I guess I am now officially an old fogey, but I don't understand how parents stopped deferring authority to teachers. Sure some teachers are bastards, and controls on the old cruelty methods were needed, but has the metaphorical baby been sucked down the plughole ?

Also, multicultural classrooms seem to have been mishandled.

I have a friend who teaches in London, and in a recent culture event, he joked that there were no Pearly Kings and Queens or Chas & Dave songs. Facetious, but it is creating the divide rather than addressing it.

I don't think there should be Catholic or Muslim or other schools insides the public education system. And I think anyone who chooses to attend one should also have a one day commitment to some general education. That's because they seem to be fragmenting the system rather than "broadening its provision".

Interesting footnote: There were no black or asian kids in my school year, there were four in the year below, and this was in Birmingham.

  15. (Extracted from the Bradstreet thread because it deserves its own thread)

A Hellblazer Tarot deck is a damned good idea, someone should mock em up with art from the series (I wonder ...) something like this excellent product http://www.beertarot.com/deck/index.htm (I got one).

John was the fool in the Vertigo deck?

In a Hellblazer deck, he'd have to be the Magician

You see, the thinking behind John as the Fool is spot on, "wild, taking risks, resisting authority" "archetypal tricksters". And indeed, the idea comes from that End of Time story in Books of Magic, so I say, The Fool.

The Magician *could* be the Golden Child as the cards kind of match, but I'm nominating him later, so The Magician is Crowley or Clarice.

Rick the Vic - The Hierophant

Sean Phillips' First - The Devil

    Zed - The High Priestess

David Lloyd's Chas - The Chariot

    Astra - The Star

    All agreed here.

    Kit - The Empress

maybe but I think the Emperor and Empress should be connected in some way. With no obvious connected pairs (except as below) leaping out at me, instead I'll go for Gabriel as The Emperor

    God - The Emperor

God as The Hermit, without a  doubt.

John & Zed or John and Kit - The Lovers

Score another success for the Vertigo Tarot: Chantinelle & Tali.

    Chas - Strength

    Map

First (from Dangerous Habits after his holy water bath) - Hanged Man

Nergal, because of his attachment to John, and because he has to be in here somewhere

    London - The World

Brilliant - not the map from Eastenders though !

    The Wheel of Fortune

    Ghant's bone abacus

    Justice

    Watford :-)

    Death

Someone associated with the more realistic side of Hellblazer death eg Family Man or Gill ?

    The Sun

    The Golden Child

    The Moon

    Mercury

    The Tower

A depiction of Newcastle, external view of Casa Nova.

    Judgement

As notes say this should indicate "a time of great change" how about the cover of issue 215 ;-)

but the Phantom Stranger should be on one of the Major Arcana cards.

He's the hermit in the Vertigo pack.

And I have no idea where Temperance would fit in.

Brendan ? Lord of the Dance ?

The Wands could be cigarettes, the Cups, bar glasses containing bar drinks, pentacles could maybe be pentagrams on various buildings or floors, and I don't know what about swords, maybe a different weapon for each card, certainly including HB favorites like crowbars, shotguns, maybe the Ace  of Winchesters could be the Ace of Swords....

  16. Welcome aboard "gengris", it's interesting that you read it that way.

I think it's been perceived as a problem with Mike Carey's run on a couple of occasions, that what would be a perfect middle act in a graphic novel comes off flat in a monthly series.

Even more so as it's a macro arc where the events from 175 to 215 teall one big story that interweaves with the previous continuity.

  17. I liked it more than I thought I would. It has that Spawn-esque feel of heaven vs hell.

Lucifier really stole the movie for me though. Gotta love the middle-aged giggling pedophile style.

    "Spawn-esque" ! I wish I'd thought of that.

(And that guys obviously never met any paedophiles. What is it with you americans that Stormare's Lucifer has to be called "gay" or "paedo" ?

Have you NO CONCEPT of camp ?)

  18. Interesting Review of the DVD that seems to take umbrage at the Hellblazer fans. I'm not sure what "new stuff" that comes with the packaging he's referring to but since he's not a regualr Hellblazer reader, it might not be new stuff afterall.

I've had lots of conversations with Nick (the reviewer) about this, but he just can't get it through his head that the main umbrage of people isn't the fact he isn't blonde or english, but rather the complete change of JC behaviour.

He clearly does not see the difference between hair/nationality and Chaz/christian-redemption.

And then he undermines his shtick by pointing out Bettany would have been better.

Like I said, Warner Bros: think James Bond.

Actually if they do turn to TAF2 (sorry Tom) now that Constanteen has been a success for them, I hope they can take a few more chances. We were teased that the follow-up may be set in London, so Constanteen should be ferried around by Sean Pertwee's Chas Chandler.

And the very first line of the film should be "I thought you quit?"
