  1. Comedy is one of the most subjective of all forms of entertainment, after all.

It took you to page three to admit that I am right and you are wrong !

Still, on reflection of stuff like Curb Your Entertainment and that, I can live with being the only person to appreciate the appeal of The Boosh.

    (It's no Sunnyside Farm, though)

  2. Twelve month writer tenures is the future.

Nice interview James, you should be one of them psychiatrists or is it journalists ?

And yes, very promising in the future management department, Denise.

    I'm certainly looking forward

(Brilliant idea about the camcorder shots of Glasgow for artist reference, btw)

  3. Victor.

You know John that is almost certainly not true, that's just the one you remember with an air of fondness. I bet it was something younger in reading age like Pippin.

For me it was probably Playhour, but then my Grandad taught me to read with Batman 100 page specials purchased from Flints.

  4. you hated it, you agree with the haters. you loved it you agree with the lovers. so: no change.

but, i dont care about other ones opinion anymore. everyone likes otherwise things, everyone wnats to see different thigns and thinks different in everything, so who cares.

  5. OI! what happened to my original post?

Last night, the BBC's fine comedy show The Mighty Boosh did a story befitting our very favourite comic series.

    1) In order to impress goth chicks, Ebola and somethingsimilar, our heroes Vince Noir and Howard Moon steal the Book of Magic from Naboo (their friend the shaman)

    2) Inadvertently, they invoke Nanatoo, the most heinous of demons ("she's got five stars") who looks like an old lady but kills people with knitting needles and wool and bus passes.

    3) When the guild of shamen find out about this, they send Shabu and Tony Harrison (a head-based octopoid cockney shaman). They decide not to send the childlike shaman whose name I forget because he is an evil and depraved pervert (and the child actor did a very good wistful smile when this was pointed out).

    4) They also revoke Naboo's shaman licence and impound his familiar - the gorilla from the zoo they were in during the first series.

    5) Vince and Howard set off to save Naboo.

    6) Which they do by posing as old ladies and tracking Nanatoo down to an infernal bingo hall ("all the sixes, six six six"). Howard saves the book by running off with it.

    7) They appear on the cover of Goth Weekly which they think is sure to impress the ladies ... but they end up going off with Naboo (in his black shaman outfit) and the gorilla one (already black but with a goth belt).

    Classic Hellblazer !

  6. Eagle-eyed S2H readers will know about this, but here's official word:

On the Vertigo side, one of the few expected announcements is a new Sandman Mystery Theater five-issue limited in 2006 by writer John Ney Rieber and newcomer artist Eric Nguyen, with covers (above) by Tim Bradstreet.

Sandman Mystery Theatre: Sleep Of Reason stars a new, 21st century “reluctant hero” who dons Wesley Dodds’ gas mask and cloak, and who faces “terrors in the war-torn cities of the Middle East that Wesley Dodd could have never imagined.”

Described by DC as “timely”, the new Sandman confronts “a conspiracy that could only have been hatched in today’s climate of global fear.”

Look for more details on both panels from CBR and a closer look at the new Sandman Mystery Theatre in a Newsarama talk with Rieber soon.

I have not been keen on "reluctant 21st Century heroes" in the Vertigo imprint, although The Creeper was good.

    BUT ooh look !

  7. Qusoor was obviously attempting to have a serious conversation with Tears, yet Tears threw quotes from my posting, which was an obvious piss, back at Qusoor. I hardly think that's fair.

Besides which, Adrian, I really don't think Tears is paid to come to this website and post, because Lord knows I've tried to see how I could get paid for posting here, but apparently the only position is filled by Rogan (who took a 4 month vacation, while I'm still here!!! ).

Well, since I did not suggest Tears was paid to post here I'll put that down to willful misinterpretation on your part. And if John G wants to deny this comment to Tears was nothing more than the "piss" to which you refer, then let him go for it. And since he called Tears with "There was nothing in the film that I hadn't seen before." I think Tears has the right to defend his case without "piss" (taking). Which he did. Now fuck, let's attempt to be civil in our disdain or we might as well be the dickheads painted by Constanteen PR's anti-comicnerd policy.

  8. Tears, get a sense of humour. You're like a fucking broken watch, and you're far too easy.

True enough, but Qusoor's being just as bad.

True enough, but Tears' had the funniest "get a room" come-back.

Tell you what folks, let Tears slag off your workplaces and see how witty are the responses. We may think the film he worked on was a pile of cack but we know humour when we see it shurely ?

  9. No but the hackneyed script, nonsensical plot and lifeless direction are.

    Badda-boom.

I'm here all week ladies and gentlemen.

But seriously folks, what's done is done. Can't we all just let bygones be bygones?

    No.

You had your say before the film came out.

    Now it's our turn ;-)

  10. oh and by the way adrian brown, this is the exact statement from lawrence on imdb about the cutting of ellie:

"Director Francis Lawrence stated that she was left on the cutting room floor because he wanted Constantine to be completely alone when he meets Angela"

So why wasn't he alone then ?

He had his little boyfriend, and those geeky occult chaps from his fan club.

And why were there several other "reasons" also mentioned in interviews ... oh, and the cut was only made after test screenings. Which makes Francis's "decisions" seem somewhat forced upon him.

Depending on your view of test screenings.

  11. well i know much worse movies. its not perfect but has few things really well done.and even you gave it a 6/10 rating like much of the forummembers

Did I give it 6/10 ? Blimey I was generous.

But yes, there were some decent aspects, mostly in visuals and one or two acting performances (sorry Tilda, even Tom said you were like a stream of bat's piss).

The thing is, this was a 9/10 story made substandard by removing key plot points and then larding on extra story to "explain" the gaps.

Oh and I know much worse movies than Constanteen too, but I didn't have such high hopes for Boxing Helena.

  12. And it has to be said that until the TPBs are out, Mike Carey's run is hardly likely to bring in new readers. It was more of an "IOU" from Karen Berger to existing Hellblazer readers in the face of That Awful Film.

  13. Look at monthly comics only (not miniseries, one offs or annuals) and Hellblazer is in the top fifty comics on the ICv2 chart.

The drop off in sales in comic shops is minimal, and in line with all the vertigo monthlies in the face of ridiculously high sales for superhero "event" comics.

Remember that it's only US comic shops on the ICV2 charts, in Europe and Australasia, we have better taste. Comic shops only have so much money to spend, and they'd rather have piles of new shite than a decent back catalogue.

You also have to consider the increase in availability of TPBs (three-monthly releases) and the slow move to that format. You only get the first month sales for most TPBs (unless they spike into the top 100 in the second month, which is unlikely as dealers usually wait for sales, which would be on a three month cycle.)

The "first month" sales of Hellblazer TPBs have gone up in the last three years.

In the regular series of TPBs only Rake at the Gates of Hell outsold Red Sepulchre significantly, and numbers in comic shops are level.

Of course, there's no indication what's going on in bookshops and websites like Amazon, but here's the sales ranks (against all books)

Dangerous Habits 10,316 (been around for ages!)

Original Sins 11,520 (reissued in March)

    Red Sepulchre 21,187 (released June)

Rare Cuts 58,890 (released in Jan)

Hellblazer Collection 76,111 (released in Jan)

Setting Sun 130,257 (released in Oct 2004)

Note that there's a significant drop off in the months after one of these comes out, so I'd say the film has kept Dangerous Habits and Original Sins sales ticking over.

Of course, the lag in releasing TPBs does not help matters, as you can see when the latest Lucifer (regularly issued) is at 3,000 in the book charts, and the preceding one is around 18,000 having been released in April.
