  1. Okay two suggestions which are probably not going to be popular:

First, the more I thought about Death and the way that it is one of the most misconstrued cards the more I came to the conclusion that, out of the characters i'm familiar with, it should actually be Astra. Death should signify massive change, perhaps leaving a way of life or a way of thinking behind, maybe rebirth to a new spiritual undertanding etc. Well Astra and her death, seem to portray this most strongly in John's life, his guilt, his entry into the main league of occult all stem from his involvement with Astra - and the image of a 12 year old one armed girl as Death may not be classic but quite powerful.

However, I've not read Critical Mass yet (although I've just managed to get hold of it and am now re-reading from issue #1) so apologies if this does not make sense after the conclusion of that arc. (don't give it away to me yet please!)

Second, The Hierophant, now I could probably lose my own argument here as I really like the idea of Ric the Vic for this one, but after browsing the Intuitive Tarot website and reading the description of the Hierophant...

The Hierophant represents the Holy Spirit and connection with Life at a spiritual level.  The Hierophant finds comfort and worth with the spiritual side of life rather then the physical.  He represents someone who is spiritual or philosophical in nature and one in search of higher truths.  The Hierophant also represents tradition in that he finds comfort and value in the new by relating it to the old tried and true ways of life.   He feels that connecting with the Creator is the most effective form of action and advises prayer above other means of communication.  The Hierophant depicts someone who is able to see through the superficial and get straight to the heart of the matter.  The Hierophant is spiritual by nature and he shies away from religious dogma.

I couldn't help but think that Demon Constantine has fulfilled most of the above criteria at various times (especially if we read his creator as being John)... not convinced? Aw c'mon we've got to get Demon John in somewhere

  2. Got to be careful not to go with too much of a kneejerk reaction here, a big part of me is saying that this is Hollywood and not what John Constantine is all about - but that's just my reverse British working class snobbery coming into play and very unfair until he's given a chance.

He seems to have a handle on the physical form, but a lot of the facial features are obscured/smudged - probably just part of his style but I need to be convinced as I personally was not swung by the way JC's features are portrayed on the mystery cover. Still he has the talent and the job, not me, so here we go for the ride.

  3. I must be sobering up because my spelling is improving.

A common misconception mate - a bit like the old adage "drinking yourself sober" - it's just that your brain is adapting to your rat arsed state of mind! And really you're just as pissed as you were Charlie!

Happy Birthday - have a great day with the clan, hope you don't end up driving the big white porcelain bus home.

  4. It's Swampy and Abby ennit?

I was thinking just that on the way home last night.

I would have said JC as The Magician, although I agree he would have been The Fool as he set out, I seem toi remember from dabbling with tarot cards (in the distant past) that there were suggestions that the fool would become the Magician as his experience and wisdom (and cynicism) grew.

Can't comment on some of the other choices as I've still got big missing gaps in my Hellblazer collection between the trades and after issue#40 but I've just got hold of all of the Jenkins run, but the reasons seem perfect behind most of them, great idea - how about a Seelig/Bradstreet collection

  5. Start with Johnny Cash's haunting version of Hurt - cos' it would make the missus blurt!

Then Children of the Sun by Hawkwind (look it's really nice ok) includes the lyrics:

We are the children of the sun

    And this is our inheritance

    No longer chaos and confusion

    But love and laughter

    Song and dance

which is about as religious as I'll ever get.

Finish off with World Shut Your Mouth by Copey (yes Ade I know there are better Copey songs - Up-Wards at 45° would be my real choice) but I'd have it just for the chorus as everyone heads out.

Hope you're not really dying Ade

  6. Clarke lying again?

After stating that this terrible event had nothing to do with Iraq (oh yeah, Abu Ghraib did nothing to radicalise the disenfranchised muslim youth) and then also claiming he was "shocked" that the bombers were British, while actually admitting to being aware that "a large number" of British citizens had been to al-Qaeda training camps (err put 2 and 2 together Charles- although I suppose he would say he was shocked but not surprised if pressed) .

Now Clarke has poured scorn on the report from French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy that some of the bombers had been arrested in 2004 but released in order to try and break a wider network, a nice coincidence then that two of them had been arrested and cautioned in 2004 for disorderly conduct in one case and shoplifting in the other.

It's always possible it is a coincidence I suppose, but the way the government are insulting our intelligence with the lies and half truths makes me more and more cynical about everything I hear from them.

  7. C'mon shouldn't this be under the Show me Yours.... I mean Show Your Wares thread

I mean really, there's a time and a place for everything......

...and it sounds like you were in the right place at the right time ;)

  8. When I first saw this thread I thought maybe it was a love thread to Lost Johnny.

    Sadly, no.

"My Johnny boy" - I hardly know Wrongemboyo and he's getting all possessive! I didn't dare look at this thread when I noticed it came under "Show Your Wares" but after seeing Rogan's Censored thread I'm even more worried - don't think I could take the comparison!

Anyway nice drawing my man - now please stop phoning all the time.

  9. James, I'm going to ask politely, please do not suggest that Sarah Kennedy is similar in looks to Jenny Agutter ever again.... otherwise I will find you and make it look like an accident!

I have spent many a happy night dreaming about one of them, the other gave me nightmares! (and no I didn't have carnal thoughts about Sarah Kennedy before anyone asks!)

  10. ...rather than the more customary computer version, which generally involves vigorously hammering a keyboard/joypad/mouse button

Mark you uncouth sod – it’s all about finesse, timing and choreographed movements as your fingers dance subtly across the keyboard… oh except perhaps when those zombie type things jump you in Far Cry or the Flood in Halo and then just maybe it does degenerate into hit every key simultaneously as fast and hard as you can while screaming at the top of your voice

PCGamer has a write-up on the AI in the new Morrowind game and it sounds aces.

Do you mean Oblivion John? It looks the biz, but between that and STALKER I see a fucking expensive upgrade path (and probably a divorce :icon_frown:)

  11. The idea's been mentioned here before, but cheap black and white trades of the earlier Hellblazer issues would be a great idea, even if full-on trades weren't forthcoming.

I had a black and white Hellblazer trade bought for me years ago around 92 or 93. Unfortunately I lent it to a friend of a friend, and friend of a friend fucked off, after becoming ex-friend of a friend etc. I have really bad recall but I think it was something like the first 11 issues, that sounds too many but I'm sure it had the Newcastle episode in it. Does anybody remember this, I can't find anything about it now.

I can remember being slightly disappointed that it was b&w but that may be because I think b&w usually works better if the artist draws it with the intention of the finished work being produced in b&w, so for effect in HB now and again - maybe, all the time - nope.

  12. I saw some of you complaining about transit to the convention site so I wondered what my transit woes would be like.

puts us whinging limeys in perspective I guess - bloody 250 mile trip

Given England's reputation for cold, wet weather, is Brighton where any sane person would want to be in November?

Erm.. relative I guess, compared to parts of northern Britain it can be classed as a balmy, sun drenched resort. Compared to Frisco it will probably feel like the Arctic! Most parts of the British coast would be decribed as bracing and character building in November, in other words cold windy and wet.

  13. Once the preparation and planning for these sort of attacks has slipped through the net, I would doubt that 1000 extra police would make make much difference.

One guy on the BBC site said that they were told to evacuate one of the tube stations (not connected to the blasts I think) by tannoy and passengers just ignored it until they were actually bellowed at face to face to leave and then he said they all shuffled off grumbling about London Transport.

  14. Well Gleneagles would you might think be the prime target for any terrorist attack but obviously would be extremely difficult to carry out.

London buses are a much softer target.

That's what i mean, I guess it would be pratically impossible to stop an attack on a bus, I would imagine it would need to be stopped during the planning stages.
