  1. I'm-gonna-mosh-like-a-bastard-and-I-don't-care-who-I-elbow-in-the-face kind of way.
I recently saw Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster and after two songs became so carried away that I entered into my first 'modern day' mosh

Luckily I was bigger than most of the kids, so did ok... for a while, but these kids don't stop do they  was seriously wondering if my mates knew how to perform CPR by the end. Great gig though.

Beck was AWESOME. He opened wth Devil's Haircut, and all was good in the World.

Green with envy Sethos - saw Beck on the Odelay tour at Aston Villa Leisure Centre 96 or 97 I think. Awesome, my third favourite gig of all time!

  2. Hi, and welcome, btw.
    Ta la.

Do try to pick up some of Paul Jenkins' issues for a very different (from Azzarello, that is) take on John Constantine, and one that I feel is much more compatible with what went before than Azzarello's version of the character. Unfortunately there is not a single Jenkins trade, but you can try ebay, or take the somewhat illegal, but in the case of an out-of-print comic justifiable (IMO), route of downloading them somewhere...

Thanks Hmpf, I've seen a few shots of of Sean Phillips art as well and it looks superb - Bloody DC not releasing them as Trades - I'm going to try and get hold of the "Critical Mass" arc (#92 to #96 I think) by hook or by crook as it seems to have been mentioned a few times on here as relating to other episodes, however, I might have to explore the download option if I can't get them - mind you I don't really have a clue about where to get that either... but I probably know a man who can!
  3. Sin City = AWESOME. probably the best comic book adaptation ever.

Wasn't it just fantastic - a real 'bollock ripping' yarn

And when his eyes go dead, the hell I send him to will seem like heaven after what I've done to him.
:o Don't anybody ever let Mickey Rourke near me ok, that was too convincing.

I was also asking on another thread (but everyone ignored me ) how people thought "A History of Violence" might fare in the comic/film adaptation scale? I haven't read it (and it doesn't appear to be too easy to get hold of locally) but I'm a big fan of Cronenberg so I'm expecting good things (although I except he can be a bit hit and miss). I can't imagine him tampering with the content due to executive interference but then again he does like to put his own stamp on things

Erm 'cough' - I was also wondering if anyone has seen it yet, as it has been premiered in Cannes, so someone could maybe possibly have seen it over there...

  4. I'm off to see Sin City tonight - I haven't looked forward to seeing a film as much as this for years.

Interesting stuff from Ade - I wonder where "A History of Violence" will fall in the comic/film adaptation scale? I haven't read it (and it doesn't appear to be too easy to get hold of locally) but I'm a big fan of Cronenberg so I'm expecting good things (although I except he can be a bit hit and miss). I can't imagine him tampering with the content due to executive interference but then again he does like to put his own stamp on things :-?

Erm 'cough' - has anyone seen it yet, as it has been premiered in Cannes, so someone could maybe possibly have seen it over there... you know wonders of modern transport and all that?

  5. Hi all

Back from sunny Wales (cough) and I land straight in the middle of photographic turf war... well this should diffuse the tension.... boring holiday snaps!!!!

Ok look I'll get the hang of making them interesting in the future, but for now marvel at me and the kids on the beach. Da Dahhhh!

 don't why I'm sticking my tongue out, perhaps a subconscious humorous jest?

Back to important stuff, ACX - superb, add me to the list of people who want to come round and play with your dressing up clothes!

Did Pooka lose her leg or was it stolen?

And finally, Ben, can I have some lessons on photography?

  6. He actually gets quite upset by even mild violence, bless him.
 Treasure it Charlie, my five year old daughter, Amber, has been watching all the Star Wars films with me - I had a lot of explaining to do when Luke got his hand cut off by his Dad! But I explained in the future it will be easy to fit a robotic arm and it won't hurt at all, so then when Anakin gets his arm lobbed off in II, she just turns round and says "that's ok Daddy he can get another one can't he?" - oops.

She was in floods though, when I told her she can't see the last one until she's a lot older!

Fantastic photo Ben, I'm off to North Wales for a week so I'll try and take inspiration from it and snap my own version - although it might have a bit of cloud in it, possibly a bit of rain as well, maybe even some kids looking miserable in anoraks, but you know a bit of magic from Photoshop and who knows  Speak to you all soon.

oh and hope you feel better soon Pooka, hope you didn't get it on your birthday dress

    J.

  7. Big thanks to everyone for the advice, just thought I'd let you know I'm off to sunny Wales for a week and will be taking the following reading matter with me:

Strangehaven Vol.1 - This really looks like my sort of thing.

Ex Machina: The first hundred days (+ issues 9 and 10)

    Preacher vol.1

All the Seven Soldier issues except I can't get hold of Shining Knight #1 just yet.

oh and a couple of Philip K. Dick novels - Ubik and A Scanner Darkly.

If I get time in between these I suppose I'll have to take the kids to the beach  speak soon.

  8. Also, that was Gary Lester, yeah ?

Yeah, I thought so. I also thought that was the first behind Nergal behind Rosacarnis. Could Nergal be the First's offspring?

That's how I saw it too, really enjoyed this issue, thought some of the artwork was breathtaking, and agree with the Grinning Fellow about the DC splash. I especially liked the way the narrow horizontal panels worked to heighten the tension and draw you in to the details, like on the third last page where they zoom in on John's mouth and then Nergal's mouth, reminded me of the end gunfight in 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'... gotta get me a pair of those red eyes, wonder if they do them as contacts?
  9. Damn, Sheriff Motherfucking Buck, if I could bring back ONE show for a final season, it'd be American Gothic.

Or Between The Lines, but probably American Gothic.

Between the Lines - I'd completely forgotten about that one, quality hairs on the back of your neck stuff, conspiracy, paranoia and 'Arry, top notch.

American Gothic - nearly called my son Caleb after this one.... but then got the heebie-jeebies thinking about it

  10. Here's a mental image for you, one of those snazzy criminal lawyers you see on TV on Law and Order every night, except instead of being rigged up in one of those snazzy suits he's up to his elbows in cattle pieces.
Oh Christ not only is he going to cut me up into little pieces, he's then going to sue me for getting blood all over his nice clean floor... listen it was all Charlie's idea, I didn't want anything to do with it.
  11. Now I'm curious... somebody please tell me I'm not the only one on here who owns his gaff outright with no mortgage... How much money do you people blow on comics? :)

EDIT: oops I was a bit worse for wear last night - finished my Dalwhinnie whiskey after the football, and didn't notice that Jason said he hadn't even got a mortgage - bleedin hell mate you must be older than Constantine  ...

I'm lucky enough to live in a part of the UK where a mortgage is still just feasible, we jumped on board the good ship Millstone about 10 years ago just at the right time, it still nearly broke us for a couple of years though (we don't earn much).

Something really has to be done for first time buyers from the lower salary brackets, otherwise it's just heading for a more subtle repeat of the grasping Thatcher years.... actually it never really ended did it: Corporate business people = holiday homes and three or four cars. Public sector workers = can't even get on the property ladder for years.

Just hang loose everyone and come the class war revolution you can seize the lands of the bourgeois classes (but not mine ok!).

  12. I just got my digital camera, so here you go you unsuspecting fools, I'm a bit drunk as well so normally I look much more alert and handsome, I bet this won't even work and then I'll look like aright dick....johnny1.jpg

and one of my alter ego...

    johnnyboy.jpg

    yes it's Wurzel Gummidge!

Right the next one's will be interesting, honest... a campsite in Wales - Ooooo

  13. I'm happy either way, anyway - I can't stand the Crazy Frog or Coldplay.
Mark does indeed speak the truth!

Oh the fun that will be had in all those homes laughing at the crazy frog, they can just stick it on loop and just laugh and laugh and laugh....

of course there will be thousands like my poor old Mum who will be a little sad cos' Coldplay is such nice music and that Chris seems like such a nice boy....

  14. Fuck Liverpool!

The last thing I need is MONTHS of various Liverpool supporting comrades reminding me of "that glorious night in Turkey".

 I take it you're from the blue half of the city perchance John.

In my defence, I have been known to wind up the red half now and again, I had to go to some family thing with the in-laws (mostly reds) just after Liverpool had beaten us (Stoke) 8 - nil.... eight bleedin nil, so I went wearing my Stoke top - took quite a bit of jip from them, so then said right I'll take this off then.... underneath I had my mates everton shirt on.

Well done getting fourth by the way, fantastic to see someone else getting in there for a change.

  15. Not sure if I should post this but here goes.

My worst birthday was on the 30th January 2001, it was my 33rd birthday and also the day my Dad died, as for so so many it was the big C. He was 57 but the dozy plonker smoked, an illness waiting to happen you might say. It was the first close experience of death for me so I spiralled down a bit from there and it's left its mark, my Dad, his Da and his Dad have all died before they were 60, so I've got a bit of a fatalistic approach to life ie. it certainly don't last forever and maybe the writings on the wall. But weirdly enough it has also woke me up to life, I'm even more cynical than before but in a world full of lies and deception by those in power and those who hold the real power (multi-national corporations) that's a bonus and as much as I can, I've learnt to live for the moment, although when you've got kids you have to keep things in a certain perspective - (Sorry kids no money for dinner this week, Daddy's blown it all in Vegas!).

So this might appear worse than yours Angie but I'm not so sure, see I had a fantastic childhood, my Mum and Dad have always been there for me (I fell out with my Dad in a big way for a year or so about drugs, but that was only because he cared and didn't understand) and now every birthday I can raise the first glass, to my Dad's memory and then get pissed as a newt and enjoy myself, whereas your folks plainly need a good kick up the backside to get their arse into gear, so they can recognise that unless they change their selfish behaviour, they're going to miss the best of times with their kid. I suggest you send 'thank you' cards to them all and write in them:

"Thank you for not giving a toss about my birthday this year, next year you are all formerly invited to free up a bit of time in your busy lives to take me to the best pub in the area and all have a good time for a change!"

Just one point as your Dad slaughters for a living, do you mind not telling him that this was my idea :-?

Oh and Pooka my Dad's birthday was June 13th, so I guess it's a good day for great things happening

  16. In recognition of Johns's home city, as well as that of my missus and numerous lowlife - I mean friends, I would just like to say:

    ***C'MON LIVERPOOL***

I can remember sitting in front of the TV with my Dad when no-one gave them a prayer against Roma, how long ago was that?

Apologies to any of our Italian brethren, and one day perhaps I could be cheering my beloved Stoke City onto the European glory, instead of wishing others well. :-?

Kris - commiserations mate, must have hurt, lick the wounds and come back fighting (not literally like).

Things could be worse, you could be owned by an Icelandic consortium who've decided to take all the money out of your club cos they were stupid enough to employ a manager with a track record of not playing foreigners and now that he won't play any icelandics (he even plays injured British players before playing "one of them foreign lads") they've thrown their dummy out of the pram. So at a time when we could have pushed on, we're left between a bunch of people who couldn't care less and a clueless manager who plays the most negative crap it's been my misfortune to have to watch week in week out - why did I get a season ticket again?:mad:

  17. Well, we've shown your ours, you have to show us yours.
Well it's strange but there are no photos of me in existence, everyone who has ever taken a photo of me are either dead or have gone insane.... :o

Actually I haven't got a digital camera ....but wait I've ordered one ...DA DA DAHN! ...and it should be here tomorrow. I'm going to Snowdonia next week and thought I should byte the technological bullet (byte - geddit - ouch). Anyway I'll post the results over on the 'Show me Yours' (why don't they do a snigger icon?) thread. Once I've touched them up with photoshop!

  18. I don't have sky but it's annoying the shit out of me via free-to-air.
It even manages to annoy my five year old daughter, so I guess that's its target audience out of the window.

However, I've just read it's going to keep Coldplay off the top spot in the charts, so it has finally managed to put a (nasty and vindictive) smile on my face

  19. ...but is very much different from the Graphic Novel.

I just don't understand why, why, why, it reads like a film storyboard (to my limited knowlesge anyway) and with all the kudos that Sin City has just received aren't they big enough to just say "it's perfect let's just leave the fuck alone this time". Sorry but V is my favourite book of all time and this really pisses me off. Sometimes I almost wish special effects hadn't come on so far, I know when they're done well it's practically like taking a trip, but it don't half let idiots like this lot off the hook when it comes to serving up shite to the multitudes, it must be just like milking cash cows. :icon_evil:
  20. I think the Carey/Manco run has been superb, I've been catching up on HB over the last couple of months and read quite a few of the trades, so it maybe that I've had more time to ponder these last few issues but biased as I maybe Manco really does it for me.

It was really interesting to see the debate about continuity etc. in this thread, very very perceptive, I think that the only thing that crossed my mind was the holy water issue and even that just made me smirk. I didn't mind the bridge of souls panels but then again I'm useless at reviewing things I enjoy, as I lose myself completely in them, be it books, films or music, its almost like going into a trance. When I've finished reading or watching something, I can't even remember quotes etc. I can follow plots and twists etc. but sometimes it's only on a second viewing that I notice some of the more peripheral things. (I'm not dense though, honest! ).

Out of interest has Kevin O'Neill ever done any art for HB, he's one of my all time favourites and I could imagine he'd be well suited to a special??

Oh one other thought I had, I wonder what it feels like to walk on a load of faces with no socks on.

  21. Pooka's right, I'm not offended at all Lost Johnny
phew - I was beginning to worry that I might get a visit from the crew. :icon_frown:

I've just trawled through the "show me your face" thread, so now I know what all you beautiful people look like, even if some of you are blue with horns!

  22. Besides...it's the Hass. How can you resist his hypnotic crotch?
Mark what the hell did I do to you to deserve this, was it in a past life?? I shut my eyes as soon as I saw it but too late the image had burnt itself onto my retina....

Oh God, I hope I don't dream tonight, I know who's going to be there when I close my eyes. :o
