  1. Lost Johnny, no the message is not for me... I don't think.  My friend likes to call John "Conj-chan" she draws in manga style all the time.  I've been trying to get her to sign up for the STH forums but she's shy :o
ACXchan, errm I think I owe you an apology, I presumed that you were a guy, hence "was the message for you" joke - I have just put 2 and 2 together and am guessing I was wrong with that assessment, of course if you are a gal then the message could still be for you but then that would mean that...

 I think I'd better go before I dig my hole any deeper

  2. Keeyah, I'll send you the first one down next week, see if you like it then we'll sort something out. It wasn't very expensive, anyway. You can always forward it on to Johnny if you don't like it. Otherwise we're a bit stuffed, with only one copy between two. Hmmm. I'll have to think about this. Maybe send Johnny the second trade?
Don't panic, I've found out the first one is available at one of my local libraries, I've put a request in, so take me out of the equation if that helps. As it is everyone's been soooo helpful I've got a mountain load to catch up on.... and a rather large credit card bill on the way methinks. Just out of interest, does anyone know how long you can let your kids go without food before social services become involved??

So how would lipstick kisses go down then?
Brilliant, does it cost extra?  ...Dead man walking.
  3. Johnny, pick up the first Ex-Machina trade - the first issue alone is worth the price and is so good that I'm not going to tell you anything about it for fear of ruining it

Didn't realise it was already out, blimey they bring the trades out fast these days don't they. Anyway have just ordered it.... I might just have to cut the plastic up if I carry on like this.

Strangehaven : A man crashes his car and ends up staying in a strange rural English town - oddness ensues.
I like the sound of this one ...next month maybe.

It reminds me of a play I heard on the radio when i was quite young, which really freaked me out. I was off school sick and I was fairly out of it if I remember right. The basic premise was that two blokes get stuck in a village when they crash their car. They stay at the local hotel while it is being fixed but then things start to conspire to stop them leaving, it was a real paranoia trip, in the end I think one gave up trying to leave but the other one finally made it to the train station and flung himself through the carriage door, only to find himself back in the hotel. Then next we hear the sound of an ECG monitor flatlining and a doctor saying something along the lines of, "we've lost the other one now" it turns out the crash had put them in a coma and one had pegged out earlier but the other one had shown signs of regaining consciousness before croaking it .... good paranoid stuff, maybe this is where all my problems started

    thanks for the recommendations.

Selkie don't tell anyone but Iron Man was my favourite as a kid. Something about the eye slits dehumanised him for me, and yet you knew the human insecurities were still locked in there, why should that appeal to a kid?? Especially when you think one of my other favourites was Rom - Spaceknight.... oh dear, I was young though.

Mark did I hear you mention Ed Brubaker?

  4. As for fundamental changes to music in any country (for better or worse), I'm with Charlie K on Sugar Hill Gang and would like to add Madonna.
I've just been listening to a joke compilation CD from my mate, which includes a mix of the Pistols "Pretty Vacant" with Madonna's "Ray of Light" - titled "Gob of Light" due to it having Johnny saying "stop the fucking spitting" at the start, it's a bloody sacrilege I tell ya...... hilarious as well mind.
  5. first round of shirt orders is closed - we should have some spares though so I'll keep you in mind.
if you do end up with any spares I'd love to get one (M or L) but obviously understand that last in means first to get one... that's right isn't it?

Otherwise I'll keep my eyes open for the second (less collectable) run.

  6. Johnny, if you're interested in trying Transmet I can help you out, cos I bought the first 3 trades, because everyone here loves them, and I'm not overly fond.
That's a mighty kind offer, I might give them a whirl at some point after Keeyah if you really don't mind, I've got a backlog of stuff to catch up on just now anyway, I've just got the first Preacher trade and Son of Man, plus those 3 Ex Machina back issues and the last 2 Seven Sons.

PS. they won't smell of perfume will they, otherwise I'm going to get in trouble again ;)

  7. Ding Ding, seconds out, round one

I know that standards have slipped in the last few years in Washington
    swift upper cut
As a matter of fact, I have met Saddam Hussein exactly the same number of times as Donald Rumsfeld met him. The difference is Donald Rumsfeld met him to sell him guns and to give him maps the better to target those guns.
followed by a stinging left jab to the face

Senator, in everything I said about Iraq, I turned out to be right and you turned out to be wrong and 100,000 people paid with their lives; 1600 of them American soldiers sent to their deaths on a pack of lies.
knockout right hook, the gobby Scotsman lays low the might of Capitol Hill.

As Kris pointed out, it's just the presentation of the basic facts already in the public domain, in fact this has all been reported in frightening clarity (at least in the UK) but these days being heard is all about soundbites and entertainment. And they made the mistake of letting the biggest showman take centre stage. Hah more fools them... would you like both barrels senator (shotgun not oil!!!)

  8. the one I can think of who made it to Heaven was Brendan, but since he can't get drunk, it probably feels more like Hell to him.
That's a brilliant idea for a story line, Brendan after years of torment of not being able to drink gets John involved in a scam to get an Irish pub set up in Heaven
  9. you could get by never buying single issues, only trades.
I know what you're saying, I've just got the first Preacher Trade, but that unhealthy sort of thrill of waiting for the next issue of some weird new title is starting to bite again.

I'm even getting pissed off that I haven't been able to locate the first issue of The Atheist that John posted about yesterday, but I'm not going to get obsessive like the rest of you weirdos

    cheers all by the way.

  10. I've not been collecting comics for about 14 years and I'm trying to pick up again with a few titles on top of HB, so I thought it might be useful for any others who are dipping their toes back into the slime (or jumping in for the first time) if there was a thread where we might get some recommendations for existing runs, as opposed to new runs which should be covered in John's post for new titles.

Newbies like me could also ask some dumb questions to help catch up with more established titles. I've already had some recommendations from the "reading in 2005" thread but Selkie bullied me into starting a new thread ;)

Seven Soldiers and Ex Machina seem like good bets so far

I've checked further down and found some answers to Seven Soldiers so I'll keep the dumb questions to Ex Machina. I've managed to pick up #10 and #11 Can anyone give me a brief synopsis of what has lead up to these issues?

I've noticed the first five episodes have been collected in a graphic novel so I guess any replies will have to carry spoiler warnings, not sure of the etiquette about this, sorry.

What's the craic with the current Doom Patrol run, this was one of my faves way back when, are they reprints or something?

Anyway any other recommendations gratefully received.

    J.

  11. I'll kick things off with The Atheist, published through Image, written by Phil Hester with art by John McCrea.  #2 is due out very soon.

Sounds just up my street, great artwork... but couldn't get it from my local comic shop ("not heard of that one mate"), can anyone recommend a decent online supplier (UK).

  12. Joy Division, Gang Of Four, Public Image Ltd(Johnny Rotten's better band), The Fall,
Can you imagine them lot on the same line up. Call me an old fart... but they don't make them like that anymore.

And it's 25 years today since Ian Curtis died.

    I feel old.

  13. The Clash were just a bunch of fools who discovered a Karl Marx book one day and decided to use that to sell themselves to the punk crowds, all that sloganeering and situationist books they were constantly quoting on their shirts, all borrowed goods and nothing original, a bit like their entire music career really...Joe Strummer, the punk rock equivalent of Joan Baez, how horrible and how depressing...indeed

Do you really think people analysed it that much at the time though? Fair enough from your personal perspective if you did but I think most would just have had some sort of emotional response to the music ie. blew them away, didn't do much for them or a few may have even hated it. Maybe they weren't as spontaneous as the Pistols and maybe their message was more contrived but from a personal level I really enjoy the reggae influences in the music, is that punk? I don't know. I know that like you I prefer the Pistols but I think it's more about the way the music makes me feel at a particular moment and just a bit harsh to say they were fools....

Still I'm sure you would agree Hawkwind are the best?

....I think I just lost this argument.

  14. you like The Clash and i don't, i like the Pistols

But hold on I like them both.... and The Stooges and MC5 and The Ramones and Television and....err Hawkwind, ok I'll get me coat.

But in all honesty things can come down to personal experiences of how or why you heard an album, cos you were pissed or stoned, or they blew you away live, or people you looked up to were into them.

I missed being there for the real thing by about 8 or 9 years but then listened because of who they influenced plus (shallow reason #1) even 10 years down the line it still felt like you were giving two fingers to society by showing allegiances to bands like the Pistols.

Personally I rate both Never Mind the Bollocks and London Calling in my top 10. I think LC conveys the feeling of the time lyrically (although I was only about 10 at the time it came out, so this might be bollocks) whereas, to me, NMTB is the epitome of saying "Fuck Off" with music.

And as a plus "Anarchy in the UK" was my wedding song and it caused much merriment and pogoing, as well as the odd disparaging glance.

Back to the original thread... did any of you see that TV documentary about Keith Moon a few years back where they had some B&W footage of Keith playing a gig after he had taken an elephant tranquilizer!!! He lost time and started to slump over the drums before a roadie crawled in (just visible on camera) and shoved a massive syringe full of adrenalin into his foot. All of a sudden it's like the film is speeded up as he goes wild, playing faster and faster, of course I don't condone it... but I nearly pissed myself laughing.

  15. Hello all

Heeeeere’s Johnny (real name Paul but only me mum calls me that)

Born in 68, Worcester, I collected Hellblazer from about #16 (somewhere in Fear Machine), which appealed to me, as I had spent some time with the convoy in 84/85 and developed a healthy distrust of the authorities.

Moved to college in Stoke in 90s and horror - gave up on HB when Delano finished, I never even gave Ennis a chance - lots of things happening at the time but no excuses really just one more bad decision.

I somehow qualified as a librarian, married with two kids - a 5 year old angel of a daughter who almost makes me think the world isn't a bad place, and a 21 month old monster, whom I feel the world isn't ready for yet.

Music heroes - Julian Cope - noticed someone else has also noted Copey, hats off sir! Hawkwind, Pistols, Clash, Nirvana, Alabama 3, Bowie, Nik Cave, etc, etc.

Saw Teenage Fanclub on Tues, (I think).

You can probably guess that I like my drink, but not toooo much, other enjoyable recreational habits have gone on the back burner since the kids came along (I've gone soft). Packed in smoking several years ago. (John would be so proud of me)

Films - favourite of all time 'Get Carter' - main character blond smoker with a trenchcoat, hmmm anyone see a pattern here. Other faves include Brazil, Richard III (Ian Mckellen), Dr. Strangelove - I saw The Life and Death of Peter Sellers the other day which was fantastic but shattered a few illusions.

Books: anything by Michael Moorcock but especially Jerry Cornelius stuff, loads of others - just read Stasiland about the east German secret police – stunning.

I've picked up HB again now mainly due to the hype around the film, more though because I presumed it would be a travesty of what I remembered. Caught up on most of the graphic novels and managed to go back to #195 in the monthly run. Think the recent stuff has been superb but can’t say I’m sure about the Azzarello run, didn’t seem like Constantine to me but hey different horses eh?

Gone on far too long sorry, I’ll have to get into this forum type thingy.

oh forgot to say I’m a Stoke City season ticket holder, so I truly am One of the Damned.

  16. I'm no expert but yes I think most would have been working class and the stuff that did happen was more like playground stuff based on tribal identities, territory etc.. It happens over here for some stupid reason, football hooligans are the same but much worse (and not by any means working class). In the 80s and even now fashion was a major factor in how you fitted in with the footy hoolies - back then they wore smart casual stuff, now the footy hooligans have to wear branded clothes, especially only certain types of baseball caps - Burberry, Stone Island etc. - what so they can say "not only did I beat their brains in, I did it looking good" ???WTF

On a lighter note my old man did part of the electrics for one of The Who's concerts (at Charlton Athletic I think - which was in the Guinness book of records as the loudest gig ever.)

  17. This is a very difficult subject to talk about, just ask my wife.

You think that's difficult - after seeing the cover to #211, I'm now going to have to explain to the missus why, after 14 years in the comics wilderness, I'm buying comics about beautiful young women in bondage gear!

*note to self - don't leave Daddy's comics lying around on coffee table.

As for a TB one off - Fuck, aye! I've just started getting hellblazer again after stopping at the end of Delano's run (just one more bad decision in my life), I've managed to get back issues from #195 (except #201) plus caught up on some of the graphic novels and I have to say I think TBs covers are just the dogs bollox - the present story lines and manco's art are both superb as well, I've returned to the fold my fellow brethren.
