  1. Shades of Clive Barker there and I will shed a tear the day Neil Gaiman produces something like Lord of Illusions.
    I liked Lord of Illusions....

As for Ellis, I haven't really been following his career too closely these days. Has he announced he's going to be writing novels or has he already started?
Hmmmm, there was a thread about Warren Ellis somewhere....
  2. The single issues came with extras: parts of the script; letters from fans with responses from Wozza; general musings from Wozza; and frequently, Wozza tells us where he ripped off that story's idea from.

You're not missing much unless you really enjoy Wozza World.

  3. The car bit I don't mind at all--- it's exactly what I'd do if I thought I was the last person on earth.

(Although I'd go with an original Shelby Cobra rather than the modern version.)

  4. Not sure if you're taking the piss or if you're really asking, but I'll answer anyway:

that quote in my post? It comes from the movie's official blurb.

    "Brilliant scientist."

    Their words, not mine.

    Be afraid, very afraid.

  5. "Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist..."

And that's when I lost interest.

Also, is it too much to ask that a "brilliant scientist" not have the body of a professional athlete?

Unless it's the body of a professional bowler, that is. Seriously, how many scientists, mathematicians, geniuses, geeks, etc. do you know that have a muscular build shared by less than 2% of the population?

A slightly better link to the trailer, with movie blurb.

  6. Yes, but (thankfully) without much gore and (refreshingly) without any gun play.

There are a couple of violent moments in the sequel that border on gore, but there's always enough action to balance out the politics. It is, after all, a gangster film.

  7. Saw a double-feature last night, Johnnie To's Election, and its sequel, Election 2.

Basically, it's a Hong Kong version of the Godfather saga, with the Chinese Triad in place of the Italian mob.

I don't know if Testy and Abhi have seen either of these films yet, but they're right up their collective alleys.

The films are entertaining and have a number of refreshing takes on the oft cliched-riddled crime/gangster genre, many of which I'll go into detail about at a later date.

The basic premise is this: every 2 years the Wo Sing Society (one of the more powerful Triad associations in Hong Kong) holds democratic elections for the position of Chairman, which is essentially the same as Godfather. Election is concerned with 2 prime candidates and what they do to try and win, while the sequel deals with the next election and the multiple candidates.

While the series is entertaining, it plays out more like strong episodic tv along the lines of The Sopranos, yet without the benefit of added time in which to flesh out characters and sub-plots--- the films feel like what you'd get if you condensed the last 2 seasons of The Sopranos into 3.5 hours of running time.

    Recommended.

    7/10

  8. I don't know about cliched - I'd like it if you could explain that in more detail - but the writer was obviously borrowing heavily from Seinfeld in terms of structuring his plots.

I'll go into even further detail in another post, but briefly:

The first episode is rife with sitcom writing cliches. Perhaps the most egregious is when the IT guys drag their new manager upstairs to get her fired, and before they can make their case the boss gets a phone call and starts in on his whole "team first" exposition. Painfully unfunny, particularly the way it was executed.

Now, take a similar joke made on the Knowing Me, Knowing Yule... with Alan Partridge special. Alan has a new BBC executive on and is constantly putting his foot in his mouth by saying one thing, having the exec say/think the opposite, then having Alan backtrack to agree with the exec.

The way the (essentially) same joke was handled on this show was infinitely funnier than the way it was played out on The IT Crowd.

Granted, KMKY is overall infinitely funnier than TITC, but there you go.

    More examples to come....
