  1. Gen – Your critique is right on and please feel free to do so. The expression is wrong to me. The brow needs to be brought lower and the lip higher. Perhaps tilting of the head a bit more forward will help as well. The devil is too far to the right for symmetry but I couldn’t bring myself to erase it and draw it again. I liked his pose. The angel needs to be redone.

For some reason I couldn’t pull this one together. I know I have the ability to…but there was a mental block, I think. The equivalent of writers block perhaps? Though this may not be the picture of my frustration, it definitely captures it for me for other reasons.

I thought it only fair to post things that I'm proud of and things that I'm not so proud of. In the interest of honesty, I guess. Besides, I promised. ;)

    ...

Jon – Self taught. But I don’t know if you can really call it that. I was taught but I never met the artists I learned from. I spent countless hours in my room dissecting the work of Neal Adams, Art Adams, Mark Silvistri, Jim Lee, Carlos Pacheco, and others. Friends bought comics to collect in nice packaging. I wore them out and tore them apart.

The only art class I ever took was a ceramics class in highschool. I’m not your typical artsy type. I’m a math nerd and didn’t really pursue art academically. In college I took only those classes needed for my major. I regret not taking art classes. I’m sure they could have only helped me.

I bought a book on how to draw cars once. I hate to draw cars. But I found that looking at a picture of a car was just as effective.

And on exchanging notes...nothing would make me happier.

  2. Josh - True. I was almost ashamed to post it. I look at it and all I see is a collection of flaws. Just one of those days. It happens sometimes. But thank you.

Trace - Mahalo nui loa, compadre.

  3. Thanks everyone.

Panel art is really fun. The whole reason I got into comics was because I loved that you could tell stories with pictures.

Fredi – I know what you mean. If I didn’t have to use 0.3 for drafting, I probably would have never used it for drawing. But now that I do use it, it’s my most valuable tool. Especially since I like to work with fine lines.

    ...

Jon – "diga no al portaminas!!!!!!!"...Translation? And when you use your fine pen, do you have a problem with bleeding? Perhaps I'm using the wrong paper hmmm? If that's the problem, I'll convince my office to use one that's more inking friendly for the printers.

Gen – It’s not quite finished but I think you’ll get the idea.

Frustration with a bit of an artist’s twist.

I borrowed the face of a friend. I think I’ll revisit this one. In fact, I’d like to redo it. Can’t tell you how many times I wanted to crumple it up and toss it. Not sure if it was just because of how I was feeling though. But I kept it because underneath all my criticisms, I think the basic idea is a good one.

For now, I've sent him to wait on the church roof. He'll keep Nightcrawler company.

And my art supplies, I shall not forget.

  4. hagren - I'm looking at these pieces and thinking they're not rubbish at all. I especially like the very first. I think you're on to something. The one you inked on the yellow paper actually looks quite good. You mentioned earlier that you quit drawing.

    Please don't.

  5. Ah ha ha ha haaaaa! Holy shit that is classic!

You've got to do more one-page panels like this!

    Fucking excellent!

(I have to admit I was half expecting to see the swooning girl wearing t-shirt that said "Zenith to the power of 16" or something. )

Thought you’d like that one! I had fun drawing it! That Zenith tee sounds like a good idea too. I can still make changes. That’s the good thing about pencil art…I can giveth…and I can taketh away. More is on the way, my man, once my brain concocts them.

Incs – Glad you like it. And you're right.

    Pooka –

Jon – Strictly pencils, sir. When I scan it, I lower the brightness and increase the contrast to make the lines darker. I work with a Sanford Pro-touch II, 0.3mm. Any 0.3mm lead pencil will do for me, actually. I only know the name of it now cause I just looked cause you asked. For shading of larger areas, I use a 0.7mm lead pencil. Again, any one will do as I just steal them from work. The paper I use is also taken from work so I’m not really using specialized materials. Of course you gather that the drawings I’ve posted are much smaller than they appear in the scans. Constantine is really about 5.5 inches tall. So the lines are much finer than they look. 0.3mm does it for me with HB lead. But I do everything in 0.3 including all my engineering work and general writing. So I’m not sure if it’s what you should use, it’s just what I’m used to.

Gen – Aren’t we all. When I came home from work last night, I passed out almost as soon as I walked in the door. I didn’t even look at my computer. Soon I’ll be packing and arranging and I’m sure I won’t be posting pics for a while. I’d like to do what I can now…plus it’s nice having someone to draw for…even if they didn’t ask. ;)

I’m off to work. 1 week down.

  6. Is there any particular reason you can't take your dog with you, Goblin? Or is it just that it's not convenient to move such a distance with a dog?

Malin – Sorry to hear about your failed plans. Sounds like it would’ve been a really nice time otherwise. Working gives you what you need in life...but occasionally will take life away. Forgot who told me that. With regards to Kia’i (which means guard in Hawaiian…don’t know if I mentioned that). I’m not the only one who loves him. My brother’s quite attached and he’s staying. I’m afraid it would be too hard on both of us if I brought him. The house isn’t suitable for a dog of his size. He’s a rottweiler. Vegas heat would be too much for him to bear. He’s happy in Hawaii where he can run outside. Funny how I’ll miss him more than everyone else. Guess it’s because I know I can’t call or write him.

Jon – finals are always rant-worthy. What are you studying?

  7. Hoping this will merit another one.

    Trace, this one's for you.

Wondered what I was going to do tonight till your post spun the wheels in my head.

    Enjoy.

    ...

Incs - Further evidence of my odd imagination.

    ...

GenGris - I said in the Rants thread that I'd captured my frustrations visually for you. But I'm afraid I'm not finished and I'm soon to fall asleep. Tomorrow then? :-?

  8. Why thank you, Coralys.

But, sadly, I must concede to Sethos.

    What's the winner getting anyway?

I personally would love one of his photographs. I've been strolling through the Show Your Wares section.

    His work is amazing.

  9. To the lovely Ms. GenGris -

I haven't been here long but

    well

    I like you a lot.

    Happy Anniversary.

    - goblin

    Christian brought a poem

    Coralys brought balloons

Didn't feel right not bringing something to the party! So I brought a friend ;)

  10. My odd imagination. First I wanted to draw Kitty putting her arms through the bottom of her own head and having her fingers come out the top of it to form some sort of strange crown or holding an apple or something. Maybe even giving the finger. But as I thought about it, the proportions would’ve proven difficult for me to manage. The body just doesn’t bend well that way. We’re not meant to put our hands through our head.

So I kept thinking thinking thinking while doing my work and wishing I were somewhere else and decided to use her pet dragon Lockheed. I had the rest of the day for my imagination to twist and turn and finally got the general pose. And it’s not enough to have Lockheed coming out of her…he needed to be doing something.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE DOING SOMETHING. Keeping that thought in your head keeps drawings interesting.

I don’t recall seeing anything like this done with her before so…

    ...

Gen – More is on the way. I work in the hours after work. When the day’s frustrations funnel through my hands. I'm working on Nightcrawler now but he's giving me a hard time. I think I might abandon him.

    ...

Oh…and when I draw, I listen to music. Most often trance music or something with no words so I can create the story on my own. I drew Shadowcat to ATB’s “Obsession”. I’m really loving it.

  11. wel...i guess thats exactly what i like about the show. Its easy to follow and simple TV.It helps me rest my head after watching lost and battle star galactica.

If it's what you like to watch...then watch away. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

    That being said...

    Grey's Anatomy SUCKS!

    jk ;)

  12. That looks like a white mouse costume to me...with blue ears...but still a mouse.

But, hey, for Jon's artwork I'll give it a try.

"What's up Doc?...No really...please tell me what's up with me and why I'm attracted to rabbits...sexually."

    Also..

"I'm late I'm late I'm late...for a very important date. And here she is."

    I tried

  13. Gen, you’re too kind. :)

I’m working to capture my frustrations visually for you. Will post later tonight if I finish. Found a nice rant type smiley madgo.gif

    My rant…

Too much on my plate. But I can’t get rid of anything yet. All in due time.

Work. 2 projects. Understaffed. Must finish in 2 weeks even though I swear 1 project takes about a month. Must give presentations on hydraulic modeling since I’m the only one who’s been doing it for the past 6 months owing to the fact that the seniors are “too busy” to learn. I hate presentations. I hate them passionately.

Must pack for the move. I haven’t much but it’s a pain in the ass just the same.

Emotions emotions emotions. Excited to go but sad to leave. That’s normal…but on top of everything else…UUUGH.

No time for the dojo to take my frustrations out properly.

I'm really going to miss Kia'i (my dog). It breaks the heart to look at him knowing I may not see him again.

  14. Goblin - what 2 weeks? to go to Nevada?

2 weeks till I leave my current job. After that I have another week till I leave for Nevada. And then 2 weeks till I start my new job. To say things are hectic is an understatement. My work seems determined to get everything they can out of me in the time I have left.

Something worthy of a post in the Rants thread I think. But another time.

  15. I see what you mean.

The grass is always greener I suppose. I had a long day at work.

Twilight seemed to be doing things that he enjoyed. So what if he didn't produce anything. I'd love that kind of day :)

Still a ways to go till my two weeks are up.

    ...

On another note, I'm greatly impressed by the artisitc talent of people on this board. It's awakened something in me that's been long stifled by my pursuit of engineering. A big thanks to all of you artists on board.
