  1. I don't see what difference the rating is going to make.

Any "adult" content would be anything but. All it would mean is T&A and a little bit of gore. The producers have more than proved that they haven't got the slightest grasp on the adult themes of the book.

Swearing aside, most of the things that I like about the book could probably be shoehorned into a PG-13 book.

Hell, they're making "His Dark Materials" into a film for kids and thats WAAAAAAY more subversive than Hellblazer ever has been.

When they take an r rated idea and make a PG-13 film, if usually feels... restrained? Incomplete? Off?

Not that the movie would feel right anywho.

  2. Remember--just because they plan on releasing it with an "r" rateing doesn't mean that they will stick to it when opening day comes.  Look at "Aliens Vs. Predator".

Official word I just heard is that they were shooting for a PG-13, not an R. Bummer of all bummers... I was wrong.

Looks like I fired off that prediction right on time. Booya! Except that its bad news. Kind of. I dunno. Don't really care. The r rated version will prolly be on DVD.

  3. So...Scott Lobdell was the OTHER guy to vote for Paul Jenkins' run on H.B. as their favourite!!!

Just kidding, Jenkins is all good. I wish him the best of luck with whatever is ailing him at the moment. I'd love to talk to the guy!

He's one of the VERY few writers who are able to pen their best work at Marvel, so more power to him!

I didn't know anything was ailing him. What's the story? I hope he's alright.

  4. I'm going to see it. I figure:

    1) If might be interesting as a horror movie, independant from Hellblazer

    2) If I go in expecting bitter disapointment, I may be pleasantly surprised (yeah, right!)

    3) If all else fails, I can give it the MST3K treatment, which was the only thing that kept me in the theater during "Starship Troopers".

Remember--just because they plan on releasing it with an "r" rateing doesn't mean that they will stick to it when opening day comes. Look at "Aliens Vs. Predator".

  5. Obviously, putting Gemma on the cover suggests that she may by on her way out. I have another proposal, however. It does contain a spoiler from the movie, so cover your eyes, boys and girls, lest your enjoyment of that fine film be marred. (or is that "merde"?)

It is to my understanding that Chaz bites it in the film.  Could this be a case of the film being informed by the editorial decisions of DC?  Or maybe the editorial decisions are informed by the film.  I dunno.  It's like that snake swallowing its own tail.  What's that called?

    "Oroborous."

    No, that's not right.

    Heh.

  6. True story...

In 98 or 99 (I think), I met Paul Jenkins at the Mid-Ohio-Con. Now, I was going on about 1 hour of sleep, and I was a little smart-assed punk, so I say to him, "I don't care what anyone says; I liked your Hellblazer stuff!"

He just looked at me in stunned silence for about 10 seconds, then began laughing maniacly. He called Scott Lobdell (I think) over to tell him what I'd said.

He was a real nice guy, though. He got me to buy his CD he made in the early 90's (with a band called Grave Goods). His pitch went something like this:

"You should but my CD. All of the proceeds go to an orphanage." He shoud me a paper that had the name of the orphanage.

"Actually, I have to take my girlfriend out to eat, but the rest goes to the orphanage. After I make my car payment. And buy some clothes. Of course, there is also my massive cocaine habit to consider. After that, though, if there is any money left, it goes to the kids. I swear."

Great sense of humor. I'm glad he didn't punch me after my comment.

  7. Google Image Search threw up a load of movie clips when I was thrawling around for that panel, looks like the flick was an incredible faithful adaptation of the manga.

From what I watched it was. The director wasn't afraid to go too campy with it, which worked.

    MINOR SPOILER INVISITEXT

The part where the one kid starts to turn into a slug didn't work, though.

The spoiler was very minor; I just wanted to figure out the invisitext thing.

  8. . . . and I don't consider caffeine a vice.

Caffine was definately a vice for me. I would start my day with a 20 ounce Code Red. When I got to school, I would drink a can of Code Red. Then, in between my 1st and second classes, I would have...a can of Code Red. After my second class, I would go to Borders and have a couple cups of coffee. During the day, as time permitted, I would drink more Code Red.

Sometimes my heart would beat funny, like "bump-bump, bump-bump, bumpupupbah, bump, ..., Bump-Bump."

The day I stopped drinking caffine, I had my first and only migrane.

I still drink some caffine, as it is impossible to get away from. I try to limit my intake to a couple of cups of green tea a day.

  9. I just want to know, if your name is Colin, why would you pronounce it "colon"? You're just asking for trouble.

At the store where I work, we had the vanity fair issue with the Bush admin. on the cover. I told my coworkers, "That's the only time you'll see a Bush, a Dick, and a Colin on the cover of a magazine at this store."

    Oh, I am sooooooooooooo clever.

  10. From my profile:

"I like Comic Books, Role Playing Games, Anime, and various other dorky things.

I work at a video store as a clerk, as well as at my local college's writing center as

    a tutor.

This is how I pay for all my bling.

    Comics I read:

    Hellblazer

    Swamp Thing

    Outsiders (for now)

    Conan (kick ass!)

Besides by working two jobs and partaking in my dorky hobbies, I am a semi-practicing Witch. (I'm a lazy bastard)

I am also married to a wonderful and gorgeous woman.

There. That's all you need to know about me."

  11. I came n a little late in the conversation, but...

I don't think JC should die. Part of what makes him John is that he cheats death, even when there should by no way out. I would rather see him walk away from the title to let Gemma take over. As someone else mentioned, it would be cool to see Johhny boy return to the mysterious lurker in the shadows mode.

That being said, if the series were to end, it would need to be replaced. There are a lot of horror titles out there, but Hellblazer is usually (when done right) one of the most psychological of them.
