  1. Oh, and lastly, id REALLY bugged me that the book took place in 1990, and Larry Underwood's idea of a sex symbol was Raquel Welch. Not that there's anything wrong with Raquel Welch, but it felt anachronistic.

Which version are you reading? I've only read the original, which as far as I remember was written in '80 or thereabouts.

The version is the "Complete and Uncut" version...around 1988, King added about 400 pages that were previously cut, and supposedly he updated the culteral references. Oh, and the original took place in 1980-1981. This one, he changed the dates to 1990-1991.

I just read Nick's first chapter, and I really liked it. I notice that there is no exposition at all in this chapter, so I'm sure that I just don't like pointless exposition.

  2. Ironically I can't drink beer anymore like I used to. Whenever I used to stay at my friends house I would drink lots of a beer and be perfectly fine. Now when i do it, even after drinking half a fucking glass I end up with a huge gas bubble in my stomach that won't go away and that makes it so I feel like shit and can't eat anything. Tho I drink mixed drinks like Margaritas or fruit drinks mixed with booze. What the fuck? It should be the other way around. Beer is like 4% alcohol while everything else is much more.

    Go buy some Newcastle.

  3. I started reading The Stand by Stephen King. So far, I'm 60 pages in and I'm not impressed. Does it get any better?

I absolutely loved The Stand. It does start out a teensy bit slow but will soon pick up in a major way. Jessie, however, is right in that if you don't like the characters then you might not like the book as much as us, given that it trades very heavily on your attachment to the characters. Like most good King books.

Bad King books, on the other hand, trade on impressing readers with the cleverness of YET ANOTHER implausible supernatural being/dream-creature/alien/psychic force/group delusion that is somehow exactly like those in the last seventy books.

I think that I like the characters themselves, there's just little things that challenge my disbelief. The first chapter with Frannie, for instance, felt a little too much like a male author thrying to think like a woman who has just found out she's "preggers". The second Frannie chapter, with her Dad, felt much more believable. Maybe I just don't like the way he introduces his characters.

I also hate the way he segues into exposition. That's why I'm thinking that I might like it more as I read it.

  4. The new cartoon I wrote for My Very Own Adventure is done! I wrote it AND did 2 of the voices! Can you tell which ones (without looking at the credits)?

There's a scene after the credits, so it's pretty much like Iron Man.

    Or not.

    I spotted you!

You're the one in the yellow top, with the dark hair, right?

Are you the monkey that talks really fast?

Actually, my brother is the chimp. (I mean the voice of the chimp. He's not literally a chimp.)

I have a distinct feeling George Lucas wrote parts of this script...

Heh. I put more references in, but all of the visual references were written out in editing. They're not plagairism! They are those post-modern pop-culture references the kisd love so much! :P

  6. Southland Tales - oh dear. I sooo wanted to like this film. I was willing to believe that this was only going to appeal to certain more forgiving people who admired the ambition if not the execution.

    ...sigh...

I was watching lots of tandem elements some of which were enjoyable some were tedious but they all seemed to be building to how they would come together at the end. They didn't really. I just read a very detailed synopsis of what happened and it doesn't seem I missed some unifying clue. It wasn't clear what the characters wanted or even thought they were doing.

I always felt that critics were harsh for criticising Richard Kelly's rough cut (ie - not ready yet!) when it played at Cannes but niw I'm just beyond belief that a studio would have stumped up a 15 million budget for the screenplay before they even shot one frame. A fine line between studio interference and then just leaving some 'genius' to do what they want.

(case in point - Donnie Darko being faaaaar superior to Kelly's director's cut).

    Still....sigh... C

EDIT: Gah. Now I feel bad. Despite how disappointed I was, there was still something there that part of me liked. Maybe it was just the well-meaning intent.

    C+

I felt EXACTLY the same way about this movie. I just didnt bother putting it all down as it takes too much effort to write schizoid reviews!

I actually thought a couple aspects of the movie were outright excellent and not merely enjoyable.

One cameo did give me much amusement too.

We all watched it at the same time!

Here's what I said about it on my blog:

  7. Most King adaptations are vastly inferior to the book though.

Fight club the film is better than the book.

See, I though that besides a few scenes, the book and the movie were pretty similar experiences.

The same goes for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

  8. All good news for Moore, anyway. More money from DC -- the company he

won't work for -- brought to him by the movie he has disowned.

Clearly, I sold my soul to altogether the wrong devil.

Actually, Byrne, I think that Moore gives all the money to the artist who worked on the book. Re refuses to take money for these movies. At least he did with LoEG and VfV.

Ok...so spoil this for me...Who watches the Watchmen?

If it pleases you to know this old chum, then, I am glad, but I feel like a real dork right now, and YOU DID IT.

I am in a inter-web-cafe , sitting across from two beautiful foreign girls and YOU just made snot come out my nose and they saw it. .. . . . .

Just keeping you out of trouble.

(I was going to say "Keeping your nose clean, but I guess I didn't do that. Keeping it cleaned out, maybe...)

  10. Very different. Since no one can top the Joker in the villains department, the focus of the next movie should shift back straight to Batman. There's tons of potential angst leftover from TDK just waiting to happen. Waddya say TestosteRohne?

Not that it's all what Batman should be about. But it was sorely lacking in TDK.

    Agreed.

There's always the Scarecrow, and Mr. Zsasz.

Deadshot could get called in by the mob. That might be interesting.

  11. Hands up anyone who hasn't read it, then. Then if it's no-one, how about spoilers for any differences in the movie, but none for the book?

That's a good idea. I really don't see the point of having to use spoilers to discuss a 20 year old comic book ( and one that any self respecting comic fan should have read) on a bloody forum whose sole existence is the discussion of comics.

Ok...so spoil this for me...Who watches the Watchmen?

(Kidding...I've read the book 5 or 6 times)

  12. Here's a pic of the awe-inspiring weather we've had yesterday in Oslo.

No, I have not taken this photo myself. I'd die of pride if I had.

It's like one of those inspirational, christian pictures of clouds that show "God's glory."

    This is Thor's glory.

  13. I've cycled approx 20 miles every day for the last fortnight, and somehow seem to have accidentally quit smoking on account of it, as the very though of a fag is making my lungs want to go elsewhere, and has done for quite a while

At present, I am not sure if this is a positive development.

    Sure it is! Go you!

    Smoking will stunt your growth!

Seriously, though, it's good that the thought of smoking isn't appealing to at least part of you. They say that the worst parts of giving up smoking are the first few weeks and the rest of your life after that.

    Good luck, though!

  14. I ran in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame 2 mile race this sunday. I came in at 18:43:90, which is faster than my time last year, so I'm happy.

Here's a pic, stolen from the Ohio Challenge Series website. I'm the one with the YMCA shirt and the two knee braces.
