  1. Poor old Red, the last message he sends me before going away said "so, have you split up with him yet?"  :o  and now he waltzes back with his comments about Harlan. You must feel pretty fucking shit, guy!

Even with my amazing yoga abilities I can't get both my feet in my mouth!

Ouch. Looking back at that post to Christian it sounds really really bad. I seriously didn't mean it in a bad way, Christian. I meant the part about losing a pet being tough sincerely! (The "stop sulking" part was about you thinking we all ignore you or something) I'm sorry!

And yes, Pooka, that comment was, in retrospect....unlucky. It was meant as a joke, as I think you know! I had NO idea it'd become reality in such a short time!

    Gee...I really screwed this up, didn't I? :(

  2. James Earl Jones is wonderful. But I also think Tom Waits might be oddly satisfying... (for the USA)

As for us...hmmm, tough one, I admit.

    Morten Harket? No, too slick

Liv Ullmann? Ye GODS no, I'd claw my ears out

Radka Toneff? (jazz singer, just amazing!) We're on to something

    Have to think more

  3. Hmmm... my two cents:

    1. The humanities are essential, for MANY reasons, both culturally, politically, and scientifically. I'd argue that many "hard science" breakthroughs are impossible without "soft science". The humanities are about structuring the way we think and how we perceive the world. This is essential to gain new ground in natural sciences as well. Would Darwin's work have been possible without the hard work done by humanist philosophers etc. before? I think not. And Abhimanyu and Avaunt both make very good points.

    2. While I value science and intellectual pursuits, I'd have to say that I think the respect for "honest labor" is way too low in the world. Intellectual pursuits is a surplus phenomenon made possible by the toil of many people, construction workers among others. A proffessor is in my eyes neither superior to, or more essential to, society than a sewage worker, for intsance. They're all needed (except telemarketers and currency speculators ;) ) Sadly, the elitist society we live in values one type of skill and derides others. It's called cultural imperialism, among other things.

  4. This is just so silly and flies in the face of virtually all REAL research done about homosexuality that I have a hard time taking it seriously.... if it wasn't for the fact that the Crazy Religious Right-movement is so scarily strong in the US at the moment.

But if your assessment of the crowd (mostly disgusted) is correct, that's at least a good thing!
