  1. If nothing else, it's definitely an inventory cover as the base image of John has been on Manco's website. See ? He walks all over Mr Lauren's art even when he's not being paid for a full job. What an inditement of the Fine Art world.

(Which is probably why Lauren's art is so creased)

(Are we fed up of those jokes about the distressed look yet?)

    (No?)

(Good, cos there's plenty more where that came from.)

(NB, the vitriol is ironic, you all know that? It's like Tom and That Awful Film. Good harmless fun. That's all. Well, and a bundle of disappointment wrapped around a turd. Whoopsy daisy there I go again ! Look, let me say that they are nowhere near the worst covers ever seen on a Hellblazer comic. Happy now.)

  2. I actually thought this week's held together better than most. Although it's not my favourite. Too much tension would not have been in keeping with the rest of the series, but it was there at the right moments.

The football one annoyed me in the end because of the sub-Hornby monologue at the end. Which was a shame because it was otherwise a good idea.

The fact that all of the supporting cast except Glennister play their roles as if they were in a 1970s cop show means they might get overlooked. Oh wait, the black pub landlord is quite wrong, but Rudolph Walker being busy and Norman Beaton is sadly no longer with us.

That's not to say Glennister is not the best thing about it by the way.

  3. At least there's no such thing as passive drinking (unless you're getting your ear bent by a drunk who won't shut up, I suppose...)

The equivalent of passive drinking is getting run over by a drink-driver,

or perhaps having someone vomit on you.

  4. I should modify my point slightly to say ... isn't it ironic to be banning smoking in pubs and clubs while encouraging people to drink more by opening them longer?

Perhaps they should allow smoking after 11.00pm ;-)

Actually I do believe the Govt are liberalising alcohol and gambling because they know they are going to lose out on smoking tax.

Note that it's the social problems of alcohol that everyone focuses on -

tobacco causes more deaths but alcohol has wider-ranging health impact.

  5. "Do the panel think we should get Danish cartoonists to draw all of our ID Card pictures?"

My experiences on those sort of panel shows has been mixed.

Though they were both only football programmes.

Saint & Greavsie was closely managed in the questions but the debate was very open. And it was a shame that they'd gone to an advert break when my friend Mark only shouted "that's easy for you you bald racist twat" (at the end of a debate where Greavsie mused that players called everyone names on the pitch and racist abuse on the field was no worse than someone calling someone fat).

Littlejohn was horribly stage managed even to the point that he avoided the whole area where us Birmingham City fans were sitting when we had chance to comment on something the club's managing director, Karren Brady, had said.

Also they wanted a discussion on women in football and went around the whole audience asking for a woman to ask the question "Do you think football is a man's game, difficult for a woman to break in to" ... the highlight being when they came to the four women in front of us and asked them to pose the question. One of them replied, "Errr we're from the England Womens Team".

I reckon Question Time is more open than the latter.

    Serious subjects for questions:

    The Danish Cartoons.

    The British Army boot boys.

    Changing Prime Minister by proxy.

Smoking ban: when alcohol causes more social problems than cigarettes, isn't it ironic to the banning cigarettes in pubs & clubs?

  6. That "It's not you Abby" line is why the current Swamp Thing has no interest for me.

While I totally agree with Dysart's comments about not having Swamp Thing fighting Hawkman (well, except that Alan Moore doing it once does not mean it's been done to death) he is returning us to the family supporting cast for Alec, because Abby and Alec back together is "what people want".

Like Christian, I enjoyed Millar's closing run on ST, although it went through a bad patch the climax was well done. Unlike everyone else I liked Brian K Vaughn's take on Tefe although the character was probably too much of an anti-hero to sustain her own book.

But the best themes for Swamp Thing have been three long arcs with single issue stories tied together by a theme:

Moore's American Gothic - which I like to call the Anti-Crisis.

and his Lost in Space arc.

And Veitch's time travel story which is the final word in Swampy/DCU crossovers.

When you think about it, Doug Wheeler's battle between The Grey and The Green and Millar's Unification of the Parliaments were decent stories although the component issues did not amount to as much.

Dysart's said he's brought the Alec back into Swamp Thing, and my reading of some of those issues has not enticed me to read more. Perhaps when he gets what he wants - the story of Alec and Abby - his stories will settle down.

  7. Well the show wasn't as many of those songs as they promised so don't worry about it.

Here are the songs they played on the theme:

The 6 Music PLAYLIST OF PASSION

Elvis Costello and The Attractions - I Want You (07:00)

Fear of Pop - In Love (07:07)

Lord Tanamo - You Belong To My Heart (07:25)

Johnny Cash - First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (07:48)

    Transglobal Underground - Jatayu (08:15)

Barbara Streisand and Donna Summer - No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (09:11)

Betty Barney - Momma Momma (09:28)

Ella Fitzgerald - Good Morning Heartache (09:44)

Son of Dave - Leave Without Runnin' (09:54)

  8. Well that's that then, I'm thinking the headline for the News section should be "James Gets Lauren The Sack"

    Why James?

I've been the most negative, and I'm hurt that James should get the credit.

But seriously, it's been a missed opportunity (again) by Vertigo.

New to comics writer with a great pedigree.

AND she's a woman (something worth commenting on in comics).

PLUS celebrity artist on the cover.

    BUT - NO PUBLICITY.
