  1. I'm glad we got that sorted, but I think the article is in danger of criticising the oasis because it is in a desert. But enough of my metaphors, here's a better context to view Black History Month:

Is it worth having World AIDS Day ?

  2. "How very white of you to defend them on their own behalf from their own racism."

Adrian, enough! I am not having political threads derailed too!

Let's discuss real points within this thread. I have made a number of topics to address.

Which lines are you trying to read between ?

I called you white not racist.

Anyway, I should call it quits because I thought we were having a heated debate between friends, but you went and got all hurtful.

I should know better than to argue with fundamental Christians.

  3. Adrian, you really seem to not know what you're talking about. You were the one who threw the label of "racist" at me, which isn't very productive and had less than no meaning in our conversation, yet I still showed you a modicum of respect  in our conversation after that slur because I know you from the Forum.

So your opinion is to be valued as such but mine is me "not knowing what I'm talking about" ? Sweetheart, there's that patronising tone again.

You want to explain how I've slurred you ?

There are racist undercurrents to naming one month as Black History month. Other people on the Forum are able to see it. There is inherent racism throughout pretty much all aspects of American society.

Something is blinding you to this concept. I'm not sure exactly what you're getting at....You seem to be quite angry about a simple discussion, and I'm not sure if it's because of an European attitude to race or what.

Yes, racist undercurrents which do not equate to racism. There's been a debate about the need for a black police officer's organisation here in London, and the answer is if people feel it's necessary for them then who are we to say it's wrong?

But you don't seem to want to comment on what I've said about some black people wanting to hold this month, and I *did* refer to that as a patronising attitude, ie telling folk what's bad for them.

This is NOT about taking the rights of African Americans to be proud of their heritage and culture away from them!

Where do you draw the line ?

Some people would say it's not your place to criticise the events.

I would tend to agree with you that I wish it were not necessary, but it is in the real world.

There is nothing utopian about what Twilight stated or the aims of the article I posted. Recognizing the accomplishments of African Americans along with white Americans?! WHOA! What a concept! Crazy Communists and your vision of utopia!

Do you realize how long Segregation lasted in America? It was a baby-step, because it wasn't slavery. Do I think ending slavery and placing segregation as the law was a horrible thing? Well, true that it was better than slavery. It's also something that is a horrible embarrassment to Americans today, and I don't know of anyone I care to talk to who would claim that it was anything other than racism.

How long has it been since Segregation ended in America? How far have race relations changed in America since that time?

Do you know the proportion of black people in jail versus white people? Do you know the statistics of how many black people live in America versus how many white people?

All of which some people choose to address in the manner you chose to belittle.

Don't you think it's about time that these real issues are addressed in a meaningful way instead of saying, "We gave them a whole month, what else do they need?"

Personally, it rings to me of, "We ended slavery, what else do they need?"

How long do we discuss "baby steps", "baby steps"?

Yes, but if you want everything in absolutes then nothing else will ever be satisfactory. Please, spend your energy on racism rather than psychoanalysis of people who disagree with your absolutism.

  4. Superb.

    It needs to be said.

And ex-managers should be saying it more than they do.

For every pissy commentator who says "that should not have been offside" there are players being done for nothing while violent tackles go unpunished.

Sooner they allow a sinbin for the daft stuff the better.

And this is not only because Birmingham City currently have the best yellow card record (22) and the worst red card record (7) (huh? that makes no sense!) in the Premier. Even more surprising when you consider that three of our reds were for second yellow cards.

    This might amuse you.

  5. No you said it was racist.

Like pissing petrol on aforementioned fire.

The "visited America" swipe is worthless, we all know we are talking about Utopian Fantasy when Reality needs sorting out first.

I have little time for "friendly fire" when there are plenty of other targets you can aim at. And if you don't see it as a patronising attitude then perhaps I need to introduce you to some people who support the event.

Or perhaps you should just study the work of Bill Murray and the concept of "baby steps" ?

  6. Anything else is bigotry.

    Well, no it's not.

And referring to something like this as a racist sop is like saying a bucket of water is creating a fire*. It is (ironically) not as black and white as you paint it.

Of course positive discrimination should be a means to the happy end you wish for, and for the majority of people practising it that is what it is.

(*and please, no silly remarks about potassium etc)

  7. Of course, because he *has* to say that or risk being censured.

I've said it before, referees should be pilloried in interviews after the game the way players and managers are. I see Mike "Two Cards" Riley was at it again this weekend.

  8. So, you don't think that maybe some black people thought it was a good idea to make known to those less knowledgable than you the contribution of black people in the world ? You know, to promote what they see as their heritage in the face of years of ignorance ?

How very white of you to defend them on their own behalf from their own racism.

It's a step on the road, because the whole thing isn't going to change over one miracle night.

  9. Referees are rubbish continued.

A sending off for deliberate hand ball which prevents an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

    Cautionable offences

A player is cautioned and shown the yellow card if he commits any of the following seven offences:

    is guilty of unsporting behaviour

shows dissent by word or action

persistently infringes the Laws of the Game

    delays the restart of play

fails to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner  kick or free kick

enters or re-enters the field of play without the referee’s permission

deliberately leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission

    Sending-off offences

A player is sent off and shown the red card if he commits any of the following seven offences:

is guilty of serious foul play

    is guilty of violent conduct

spits at an opponent or any other person

denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick

uses offensive or insulting or abusive language and/or gestures

receives a second caution in the same match

Note: it is not apparently correct to give someone a yellow card for hand ball.

(As an aside: a yellow card should not be given for a first foul tackle - it is either a red card or a warning.)

So, let us consider a goalkeeper who moves to pick up the ball, seeing the line of the D in front of him and only too late realising he is not in the penalty area. The ball hits his hand but you could not say he controlled the ball. Since the nearest attacker is five yards away and there is a defender between him and the ball, there is no "obvious goal-scoring opportunity" by my understanding of the term.

Just for an extra measure, consider term "deliberately" to include moving one's hand towards the ball. So at least the free kick was a correct decision.

It is handball, but is it a goalscoring opportunity? Only the referee thinks so.

Everton's goalkeeper should not have been sent off for this offence.

So. Until referees apply the rules and guidance they are given in the spirit of the game, why should we uphold the tired old defence that they have to apply the letter of the law like robots because the FA tell them to?

  10. Oh fuck off.

The "TOP 50 Memory Doppler Effect" strikes again.

    #3 is James Beautiful's "You're Blunt".

    The 21st Century's Jim Diamond.

Nice as it is, it ain't top twenty.

#2 Thank the Lord Gods Bacharach and David!

"Walk On By" by the PROPER Dionne Warwick.

Now that is a gorgeous song sung by an angel.

And the song transcends the Stranglers' version NB my earlier comment about vitriol.

(Incidentally, Roy Orbison's "Crying" and Smokey Robinson "Tracks of My Tears" were in the chart earlier on. There's two guys who should accompany any break up.)

    Number 1 ?

    ABBA's "Winner Takes it All".

You can't help but be moved by the autobiographical nature, but they also brought us "So Long" ... do you kids realise that back in the day you didn't have to be Australian or gay (or both) to like ABBA ?

  11. So right now the Cars "It's All I Can Do" is playing thru the old speakers....

You guys have seen This website, yes?

It's making me listen to country music. :icon_evil:

    Oh.

I hope you liked my CD.

Actually my fondness for some country music can best be summed up by the Dolly Parton rollercoaster ride: [uP] "Jolene" > [DOWN] lots of bland country pop > [uP] "Little Sparrow" > [DOWN] her cover of "Imagine" that I heard this morning ... has there EVER been a good cover of that song ? why do people waste their time ?

  12. Ah, now here's one that would be in my top ten.

    #5 "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor.

It's interesting, given what I said about cover versions of these sort of songs, that three of my own top ten would be cover versions (I've mentioned them above) but the singer of the version I choose has made the song their own. So many times these days, shit pop bands just try to piggy back on the quality of a song ...

    #4 "Everybody Hurts" REM

I never knew that Bill Berry wrote that.

    What a classic.

    Quite uplifting though, isn't it?

Hmmm, I wonder what number Ken Booth's "Everything I own" was ?

  13. Bah, now I am miserable again.

#8 is "If You Leave me now" by Chicago

#7 is "Sorry seems to be the hardest word" by Reg Dwight.

    :-+

So as an antidote - one of my break-up songs, when I was prone to such, was "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell.

#6 appears to be "Freedom" by Wham ... altgough everyone knows Robbie's version dedicated to Take That was better ... Oh. It's "Careless Whisper".

    Never mind, eh?

  14. And more importantly why are "Without You" by Harry Nilsson, "All by myself" by Eric Carmen, "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" by Jimmy Ruffin and "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc outside of the top ten ?

(Okay in the case of "I'm not in love" perhaps because it is not a break up song unless you misunderstand it.)

I'm watching one of those "Top 50 ..." programmes on Channel 5.

A lot of these miss the point of such classic songs and roll out the recent shitty cover versions, but tonight we are treated to a series of "not Mariah Carey's screeching", "Not West Life's karaoke ship cruise singing" etc

Of course in my book you should break up with something fast, vitriolic and loud.

Ugh! Celine Dion at 10 !

Thankfully "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More" is #9 and the titanic squawker's been scrubbed from my mind.

  15. Yeah, the idea for black history month sounds quite racist to me too, but whatever....

    Really?

Of course, a vast number of unrecognised inventors can be traced to Edison, but we don't yet have Serbian history week in honour of Tesla.

  16. For all the latest information from Josh Dis Art.

Again, whether you dig it or not, Swamp Thing is just a man now. He has made that choice. It’s one thing not to like it, it’s another thing not to get it. The statement he made that you’re quoting was when he was at his most confused and shattered, literally only hours before his psyche would grow a protective seedpod and send him hurtling into his own unconscious. He has since emerged with all of his knowledge and majesty intact, yet none of the insecurity. He will never display such confusion and weakness again (during my run). I really don’t think you understand that. Not that if you did this would be the run for you. I know that there are other things you object to.
  17. Do you know, the best thing DC could do with Swamp Thing is take it back into the DCU.

Not a bad idea that, with a wee bit of planning they could've tied it into Infinite Crisis and relaunched it under the DC bullet.

I understand there's an oblique reference to Swampy in one of them crisis books (never read them but someone on one of the "comics" forums that focus on superheroes mentioned it). And of course COMING SOON - Floro The Floronic Man !
