  1. They're killing him off again. I knew it. He has 5 days from the time issue 298 comes out. Is it cancer again? It IS called death and cigs.

I read the tea leaves. There's already a playlist for it...by the way, I hope you lot understand if the musical quality of the playlist may have gotten worse once Milligan's run kicked in. We had steam through Scab, but once India was over, it was what I think it must have been like to be the music coordinator for a Steven Seagal movie. Or maybe Jean Claude Van Damme. It got to be to the point of "do we want to insult Pavement by sticking it on a Milligan list. Then we'd go search for an older playlist with a less caliber song and switch them.

    No...DEATH BY DIDIO!!

  2. This is what John has become?

    And this:

  3. Seeing as there's no news on Milligan leaving anytime soon from NYCC '12 , we must prepare for the worst...

  4. Slinker's stripmining the forum !

Did anyone mention Constantine's age in the wedding story?

The events of Peter Milligan's run certaintly don't happen over 4 years.

Nor do Denise Mina's and Andy Diggle's issues take two and a half years.

There's always been time lags between writers and maybe even between stories, but the time line (which I last reviewed in Mike Carey's day) no longer has meaning for me. If I were a Vertigo comics writer needing an escape I'd back track everything to one night shortly before the end of Andy Diggle's run, or if you want True Nerd Plotting: the three writers since have written stories set in the alternative realities of issue 200.

So, Rosacarnis is still fucking with our boy's mind the whole time then...

  5. you haven't heard? he's in at least til 300 if not longer. i would sigh but i'd blow out my hit too soon.

Didn't Warren Ellis say much the same before there was all of that fuss about the shitawful Shoot?

i wasn't reading it back then. i was still reading mostly punisher, spider-man, x-men, and x-men spinoff comics and heavy metal magazine. I can't believe how much marvel i used to read and don't read it at all anymore. of course, that was before Vertigo was its own line? what year did Vertigo begin, 1996?

    '93

  6. That's far too harsh on John Nathan-Turner. I know the Whovian massive don't like him, but he was a pretty good producer who only resorted to trotting out drivel when the BBC refused to let him quit the job.

If you think mine's too harsh, read Thomas Cookson's reviews on both him and Russell T. Davies over at the Ratings Guide. That one shows no mercy (even I fully agree with him in the RTD review)

  7. That's what I most wonder about.

Surely, Milligan must care about the character of John Constantine.

I can't see Milligan not reading, at least, the Delano and Ennis years of HB.

Especially considering that he's planning to stay on the title longer than any writer in history on HB.

Does he actually feel he's writing quality stories?

He seems to feel that he's writing a more nuanced and true-to-character version of John than is appearing on the page, based on interviews.

I don't know...plus, the fact that he was raving about that Mindwarp character he introduced in JLD...you just have to wonder where Milligan's head is at.

Was he actually serious in his comments about Mindwarp, or what that his wry sense of humour?

At one time, I'd have thought he was being sarcastic, but I seriously doubt he was.

I used to love his humour. I found it funny when many seemed to miss it. Now, it just makes me wonder.

How can he think that he was doing justice to the character he made his own, Shade, with the stories he's been writing with that character?

There has to be some sense of self-awareness. He's not a Howard Mackie, who never had the talent, and so is totally oblivious to the fact that his stories don't work.

Can't he compare his work in the past 6 years to his work in the 1980s and see that he's lost his passion?

Nor is he DiDio either (and he worked as one of the production crew for some ABC soap in the early 80s).

Somehow he must've snapped during the aformentioned six years. I almost listed him as one of the writers who could've been a shoe-in to write for the Doctor Who New Adventures range on Gallifrey Base's Timelash section two weeks ago. But then I look back on issues 251 to now and Morrison's Bat-Opus. I'm glad I didn't.

  8. And another run from Denise Mina. The only difference between those two and Milligan is they never broke our ability to give a damn whether it's doggie blowjobs or pansy ass Steve Evans. The latter (coinsiding with the Comic industry equivilant of John Nathan-Turner that is Dan DiDio) suceeded to do just that.

Well put. Even though Mina's run wasn't much to write home about, I never felt like dropping the title completely. I read Azarello after his run ended, having only gotten into Hellblazer during Mike Carey's run, but I can imagine he was taxing in real time. Still, Mina's and Azarello's unholy fuckbaby-were their worst issues ever to mate and spawn-would be a lovely opiate compared to the horrible pcp/sniffing glue high imposed upon us by Millighast.

I, too, got into Carey's tenure whislt getting back issues of Azz, Jenkins, Ennis and even the Bad Seed TP (Diggle's first six issues). The first three arcs under Milligan signaled red flags at every turn to a point where it's self-stupidity.

  9. This has me longing for the heady old days of Brian Azzarellos dogfucking.

  10. I feel betrayed by whoever thought Milligan would do the title justice. ...

    Sorry.

Oh me too, but I suspect the people who made the decision are okay with their choice.

Fan favourite fan reviews are almost unilaterally positive.

Besides, the forum banner says it all - Mr Milligan warned us what would happen.

I saw it coming the moment Epiphany's blue-haired ass turned up.

  11. Look I have dressed like a tart says Gemma.

Phwoar! Says the Demon Syd James.

    +1

A "Carry on Constantine" comic!. With raping.

And the role of Angie Spatchcock will be now played by Hattie Jacques

  12. Apologies in advance to the gent whose copy of Hellblazer 291 I read and whose reading tastes I'm about to trash.

I've stated previously that Pete's Hellblazer isn't bad, just not what I want. Now I'm not so sure. 291 felt like it was written and illustrated by teenagers, for teenage readers. Or, as others said:

    #291-That was just dumb.

I was having these recurrent thoughts that I was reading some Top Cow comic.

Random death scene of a scumbag guy who "deserved it"? Check.

Woman in lingerie shooting a demon? Check.

Multiple references to "dark magic"? Check.

    ...

[ Spoiler : So, John murders a fellow and cheats on his wife, bang bang, like that? ]

It was not sophisticated. It was not emotional. ...

I'm not certain what the nadir was for me, but it's likely one of the following:

    • "Angie Spatchcock might have put on a few pounds, but she was still an able magician."
    • "So I killed a man who beat his wife so badly she committed suicide."
    • "...the whore she rented..."
    • "Maybe she thought because I'd fucked the whore I'd fuck her too."
    • "Angie's dart... smashes into the visual cortex."
    • Constantine drawn like a fangirl's version of David Tennant as Doctor Who

As for Angie's ongoing complaints about how bad the church was: what the fuck?

    #291-That was just dumb.

God damn, Milligan! Bad enough I had to stayed away from Nightwing due to Devin Grayson and later the Batbooks entirely with Morrison and his glorified Scrappy. Are you trying to keep my away from this book too? Cuz you damn well succeeded, you braindead fucker! Granted, Angie here looks like a Monica Lewinsky-Rachel Minor hybrid compared to Camuncoli's unflattering take in #275

And I fucking hate the Tenth Doctor!!
