  1. ...Portishead who did two great albums...

Don't forget the live one, which for my money was better than the sum of its predecessors.

    New Portishead album

18 Jan 05 - Portishead have revealed to 6 Music that they're writing a new album. It'll be their first studio release since their self titled second record in 1997.

One half of the Bristol based trip-hoppers Geoff Barrow told us it's already well on the way to being written: "We're actually into it as we speak. We took some time off for Christmas, but generally we're doing another record, yeah. We got together, sounds cool, so we're gonna go with it." The record will follow their live return, at a charity gig with Massive Attack next month. The two bands will headline a fundraiser for Oxfam's Tsumani appeal, held at the Bristol Academy on 19 February.

And Geoff Barrow says fans shouldn't be surprised that they've re-surfaced: "We've just had our heads down really, we've never actually broken up, or parted, or whatever. So for us it just seems like, even though we haven't played for years, we still see each other and write - we just haven't released a record for a long time"

Still no sign of it, but it's still supposedly coming, and if you've never heard Beth Gibbons (the singer from Portishead) solo album I strongly recommend it.

  2. Thanks for all the feedback guys, lots of things to think about in here.

To answer a few questions.. I'm in the UK in Kent and there's a shortage of good comic shops in my opinion and none that I find I particularly want to spend more time in than need be. I would probably stock a large selection of graphic novels and manga as they do indeed fly off the shelves.

Also I'd really go for the "ooo if you like that give this a go" approach, it works on me and I normally end up buying the next issues. Friendly and helpful staff goes without saying and on the employing women front I'm hopeing my girlfriend will be doing this all with me.

I'd keep the games/coffee area as separate from the main stock as possible and probably have a member of staff in attendance all the time to run games and look out for wandering hands and bulging coat pockets.

    Keep the idea coming.

    Cheers.

  3. I was wondering if you guys and girls could help me out. I'm seriously considering leaving my current job and opening a comic shop. I have the financial backing and a possible location which has no comic shop already and is quite an affluent area with lots of schools and a large college nearby.

I don't want to run just a normal comic shop though, selling just the same stuff as forbidden planet on a smaller scale obviously. I was thinking of having a sort of coffee area where people can actually read and play games etc. I'm thinking along the lines of the Games Workshop mentality where they play Warhammer and such but with collectable card games like Magic the Gathering.

Do you think this would work? Would you go to a place like that?

Any ideas, however weird and wonderful would be greatly appreciated, and I'm sure an invite to the grand opening would follow!

  4. I've been very dissapointed with Season 2 so far, the frantic pace of the first series seems to have died right off.

Has anyone mentioned that 108 (how many minutes between pressing the button) is the sum of the mystery numbers.

I was also wondering how many people now use those numbers on the lottery.

  5. Marmite is the greatest food stuff known to man. I have marmite in most sandwiches as a substitute for butter. It goes suprisingly well with all meats and is pretty nice with smoked salmon.

Spread some marmite on a bit of bread then put it under the grill until it's bubbling and toasted. Hey presto home made giant twiglet. (may cause your house to smell a bit)

  6. Congratulations John, I'm nearly there myself. Level 38 Undead Warlock so I get a free mount at 40, just need 16g for the riding skill. How long did it take you to get to 40 (type /played and it tells you how long you've played - it's normally a very scary figure!)

  7. or that the ability to restore a harddrive from a back-up has apparently been lost,

As I mentioned earlier in this very thread, It's along time ago in a galaxy far far away, they clearly haven't developed the finer points of data recovery yet as they spent too much time designing swanky spaceships. They also obviously haven't got round to making throat sweets for droids, Grevious sounded awfully unwell, he should have been tucked up in bed he clearly wasn't on top form or he might have done better in that fight.

  8. A lot of media rags try to blame all-sorts on the GTA franchise but I personally force-choked at least eight folks after an extended stint on KOTOR.

I had a similar game influenced experience yestrerday, I couldn't be bothered driving home after work and spent an hour looking for my hearthstone so I could just teleport back to my local pub.

  9. And how come in a galaxy far far away and many thousands of years into the distant future has the mullet hairstyle managed to stamp its authority as the token hairstyle of the heroic and righteous for all this time since the 20th century?

I think you'll find they were way ahead of their time with the hairstyle. It was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

It's history not sci-fi. Thats why it's so important they get all the facts right.

  10. Just bought WoW (well 6 hours ago), just having a break to eat. I can see my social life just dissapearing over the horizon now, it's in the back seat of my girlfriends car, sitting between my chances of getting a better job and my regular exercise regime.

The intro is just beautiful, that alone is worth the price of the game.

I'm a night elf druid in the Draenor realm - called Metanoia.

  11. The Song of Albion trilogy by Stephen Lawhead was far and away the best fantasy series I've read (possibly with the exception of LOTR). I seem to remember it's one of the few books that made me shed real tears.

The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelanzy are also well worth a read.

The incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony are great, the best of all that he wrote in my opinion. I think they'd really appeal to you guys actually having seen your general tastes (I spend a lot of time reading the boards and not a lot of time posting - obviously)

  12. I very rarely laugh out loud whislt reading a comic, but last night the following line from Constantine from Swamp Thing 44 had me in stiches,

"Come on mate, snap out of it. There's no point sulking. All right so there's an Apocalypse going on outside. So what ? I mean it's not the end of the world..."

The most fun I've ever had with a comic was probably Preacher, that often made me laugh and for what I imagine most decent people would find as inappropriate reasons.

  13. The thing that has amused me about the whole disaster relief effort in the UK is that whenever they mention how the British public have donated 60 million pounds (or whetever it is), they then say however the government has donated an extra 100 million pounds. Surely that's just 160 million from the UK, is'nt the governments money our money anyway!

I'd be happy to sell them, trade them or even give single issues away.

I am looking for the later issues of Animal man 51 to the end of the run.

  15. Anyone know a shop that has the Hellblazer Special written by Garth Ennis? You would wear the crown of completing my Hellblazer collection. Will pay for shiping and all that good stuff. I just haven't found one fucking place that's had it!

mycomicshop.com has it for $8 + shipping, I've used them lots and they've been very reliable, obviously it's worth buying more stuff to make the shipping costs more cost effective.
