  1. I was always a fan of Come on Pilgrim, though that's not an album, is it?

The CD version of Surfer Rosa has the complete Come On Pilgrim EP stuck on the end as a bonus. It's badly-packaged (the cover makes no attempt to point out where the break between the two records should be, which is irritating), but makes for a cracking collection of music.

The recent(ish) CD featuring the early (solo acoustic, for the most part, recorded by Black Francis/Frank Black with a portable cassette deck) demo versions of the earliest Pixies songs is well worth picking up if you're a fan of the band's first few releases.

Bah! My CD Surfer Rosa does not have the EP!!! I have the EP, though; it was actually my first exposure to the Pixies somewhere around 1994-1996.

Mark speaks truth about the Black Francis CD...good stuff.

  2. Surfer Rosa is probably my favourite Pixies album, but that's more down to personal preference than any kind of attempt at objectivity. I'm pretty much in agreement with Tom that all of 'em except the dismal TLM are pretty much on a par, quality-wise.

Loads of bands get better as their careers go on, too - very few of my favourite groups/artists debuted with their best album, and several of 'em managed/are still managing to improve with pretty much every new record - up to a point, at least.

I was always a fan of Come on Pilgrim, though that's not an album, is it? Oh well. Caraboo and Levetate Me kick ass.

  3. I grabbed Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat while I was at the library the other day. I've seen her name around but didn't know a thing about her. I love the album though. It sounds like it comes from a different era.

Yes! This album is almost constantly on my MP3 player...I just took it off 2 days ago to put on Sleater-Kinney, but I'm sure Ms. Lewis will be back soon...

My favorite songs are Rise Up With Fists!, Happy, and Born Secular. The song Rabbit Fur Coat is great , too.

  4. Yes , I play ever day if I can . The re-taking of the Nichols Mall in Stanbury Village has been a blast . Anyone who can make it we need alot of help .

I'm lost in this fog, but I'm breathing again. Great idea to leave the Church, guys.

    :)

  5. Having worked four Panic at the Disco concerts in a row (of which all four had the exact same playlists, jokes and the same sonic murders of Karma Police- Radiohead and Tonight, Tonight- The Smashing Pumpkins.), I have dusted off copies of Radiohead and The Smashing Pumpkins albums respectively in an attempt to undo the damage.

Panic at the Disco cunningly replaced the "When you mess with us" of Karma Police fame with "When you FUCK!!!! with us", much to the roaring delight of their thirteen year old audience.

The whole experience makes me feel old as new bands are now trotting these guys out as covers.

Otherwise, it's reading Doom Patrol to Morrisey.

I have a co-worker who was telling me what an expert on music her husband was, how he knew all of the obscure bands that no one had heard of. I thought, "I'll ask her to reccomend some stuff", so I asked, "what's your husband's favorite band."

She said, 'Panic! at the Disco."

    The discussion then ended.

  6. I've never had an incest dream but I have had dreams I was having sex with someone I definitely did not want to be having sex with. Why does your brain do that to you?

But this morning I dreamed I was watching a video for Roxy Music's "Love is the Drug." In the video, Bryan Ferry is prowling the discotheque looking for love. He runs across this very nerdy guy who asks him, "Hey, Bryan, you wanna, like, get some coffee and hang out?" Bryan's like, "No, man, love is the drug and I need to score." At the end of the video, Ferry strikes out! No chicks! And he runs into the nebbish again, shrugs, and the two go off for, you know, coffee and cheesecake.

    Charlie, you are odd.

  7. I have embarked on a mission....

To teach myself to play piano. I'm only missing two things. Hands.

So who's willing to lend me theres? The surgery will only cost like a few hundred grand, Come on people, help a brotha out..

"I know the kinds of things you like to touch! No way, [Randy]!"

    (Name that show I'm paraphrsing!)

  8. I'm not sure that I am for Hate Crime legislation, but it does make a little sense. Murder may have many motives, but hate crime is specifically crime against people of a specific group becaus ethey are a member of the group. The idea is to make people of that group "realize" that they are wrong, that they should hide, that they are less that human. In this way, it is more like terrorism, which is also prosecuted differently than "normal" crime.

  9. Just read the Infinite Crisis trade hardcover.

Thuroughly unimpressed. I'm really not sure what it accomplished.

I thought for sure that Superboy Prime was going to get sent back in time and become the Anti-Monitor.

    Again, unimpressed.

    52

, a few decent laughs courtesy of a fourth-wall-breaking Ambush Bug (that 'next issue' panel was a joke, right?)

I'm not reading any comics right now, as I can't afford them, but please tell me that either

    a) it featured Darkseid

    or

    b) it featured the phrase "When Titans Tussle"

  10. I second that Awww. That's really sweet, Jay. I hope her parents won't cause problems for you. It sounds like you have a real connection.

What was also touching is how she said, "No, Jason...don't be sad. Everything's OK." She thought I was upset, and even with all this shit that has gone in her life recently (things litterally got one step away from as bad as they could possibly get), she was worried about me.
