  1. I'm not saying that you're wrong about anything. I'm just saying that the overwhelmingly, consistently defeatist and pessimist attitude doesnt help either. I've been going through tremendous amounts of shit lately so I should know. I'm sure he has his eyes open. If it was just the objectivity you were worried about then the certainty of that last sentence of your previous post was unnecessary. But all right, whatever, I'll just keep out of it. Said my piece.

It's all good, Abhi. I know the kinds of advice I'll get from each person. Christian sounds pessimistic, but he is just saying, "Statistically, this is a bad idea." Wolvy, too. And they are right...statistically, it is true. I do wonder sometimes if we are setting ourselves for heartbreak. I don't think we are, but there is no way I can be completely objective. I do appriciate the advice, positive or negative, that comes my way.

  2. Looking for a GF after a divorce is called being the rebound. It's usually a bad idea. It's better to let things cool down and see how everything goes, then down line try out that realationship. otherwise you're going to end up being that one guy with like 5 ex wives.

I've thought of this, too, and I honestly think that I am not on the rebound. This wasn't really a jump from one relationship to another. It was the slow fading of one relationship and the slow rise to another one. There was a large "grey area" of which I am not proud, but though moral lines may have been crossed, nothing was done in this grey area (or now, even) that is legally actionable, if you take my meaning.

    Anywho, I didn't look for a GF.

  3. Don't get me wrong...I've concidered the same issues that Christian brings up. The thing is, I've met lots of very attractive "unattainable" women while my marriage was falling apart, and I was not tempted to pursue them. I don't get off on conflict; it makes me a wreck. I was with Krista for about 7 years before things started to go strange, and I never got bored. It sounds corney, it sounds like a cliche that someone deluding themselves would say, but if you just heard this girl (she doesn't want her name on the internet) and I talk, you would see how strange the compatabliitly is. We have the same hopes, the same fears, the same neurosis...it's a perfect match!

    On a related note, though....

I visited her at her house, and she had a New Yorker cover on her wall. It was by Adrian Tomine and depicted a man and a woman on separate subway trains, each with their own copy of the same book, looking at each other through the windows.

I said, "Adrian Tomine? you like his stuff?"

She said, "What, is he a comic book person? Weird. No, I stole that from work last year. It's called "a missed connection". I took it because it was us."

    I started bawling.

  4. It may well be.

But, Jay's just coming off a divorce. I haven't known any relationship that's been long lasting when one of the people is coming out of a relationship. That's just usually not the best time to go looking for anything serious.

I see a lot of myself in Jay. I'd rather not see Jay get hurt, and I want to make sure he's keeping his eyes open.

Sometimes you can't see anything except what is right in front of you in a relationship. It's hard to be objective.

I'm just giving him things to think about.

  5. Chill, Jay. It's a rotten thing, but the situation may improve once her parents have clamed down a bit, and there isn't anything you can do about it at the moment anyway. That's the main thing, and I can appreciate that it's pissing you off no end, but all you can do now is wait and see how it plays out.

I'm calmer, now. i take back my "I'm never writing again" declaration. Still, I think I'm going to be persistant...I'm going to keep calling today (Mind you, I called at 10AM, I won't call again until after 4PM...)

If they tall me not to call, I'm going to her house to talk to them in person. i have to straighten this out.

(I still want to hit shit, though.)

  6. Well, as per what I have said in the Sci-Fi thread, I'm freaking out, but I'm a little more rational, now. I still wish I could make the story go away, but I know that the story is being used as a scapegoat.

Still, she's not doing well at all, I'm not doing well...the whole thing's a clusterfuck.

I'm shaking and I feel the need to hit something.

  7. It's a game that really relies on its online side as the single player campaign, at least in the original, was kinda-pants.

Online though, it's as close to pure AD&D as you're going to get, which offers a good deal of appeal to certain sorts....ie, me and other filthy RPG nerds.

Heh...I was playing the original adventure on line, and we got to the part where they said, "Level up before you go out to fight."

I asked my friend, 'What is this "level up"? I don't know what he's talking about."

Later, we got to the place at the beginning where the NPC soldiers get PWND by some monster that teleports away. I said to my friend, "I guess they should have 'leveled up.''

  8. Neverwinter Nights 2, ships in 3 days.

I've had a birthday gift card reserved for this since July. Considering running two copies so me and Siri can play through the main campaign together.

I loved the 1st one, but there's a part with lots of little enemies that like to crash the computer!

  9. I just finished The Long Chalkboard and other stories, the newest graphic novel (well, short story collection actually) of Jules Feiffer. It's a collection of stories about "baby boomers" dealing with life in the 21st century. It's a pretty good book. Some of them are light-hearted, while others are sad. Most of them deal with modern angst, especially that having to do with aging.

Let's see...I guess there were 3 stories...The first one (The Long Chalkboard) is magical realism. The second one is my favourite, it's about a relationship in New York City and is sad and full of longing. The last one is a funny story about how a chili cook off and a political event can meet in the middle. It was my least favourite, but the end of the story got a chuckle from me, and was far from a bad story.

It's written in the style of illustrated prose short stories, instead of like the usual comic.

He only drew it, though, right? I thought his wife wrote it.

  10. Oops, my mistake. Some of the McGann ones are excellent, yes - I especially like the way that, unlike the Davison, Baker and McCoy stories, the first few batches of McGann stories were arranged into actual, proper seasons, with ongoing subplots and everything. Since they started long before the TV revival of the show, it was a nice idea to actually treat him as the 'current' Doctor - equally appropriately, the McGann stories which they've put out since the new TV show started have been released in the same stand-alone format as the other 'past Doctor' stories.

Since I've actually listened to every last one of the 83 (and counting...) Big Finish Doctor Who stories, it'd take forever, and be incredibly dull, to actually review all of them. So instead, I've already started putting together a relatively brief, but (hopefully) useful guide to my favourite stories featuring each audio Doctor, including pointers on which stories benefit from being listened to in sequence, and which can be enjoyed as one-offs. With a bit of luck, I'll be able to post the whole thing later tonight.

To be honest, though, the average standard of the Big Finish productions is ridiculously high (there've been some rough patches along the way, and there are a few absolute stinkers, but overall I'd rate a reasonable majority of them as equal to all but the very best which any incarnation of the TV show ever had to offer, and a good few rank among my all-time favourite Who stories), and any fan of the show with enough time on their hands to spend months listening to a few hundred hours' worth of audio drama would be well-advised to download pretty much all of them.

    *cough cough nerd! cough*

(Note: I realize that no one reading a Doctor Who thread on an internet message board devoted to a comic book has any room to talk.)

  11. Region 2 = PAL.

The NTSC to PAL conversion has never led to any problems for me and my DVD player is a cheap multi-region that I bought about five years ago.

Sometimes PAL to NTSC won't even show up on a TV, or sometimes it's black and white, and it flashes.

  12. Going off--topic for a moment, a friend has told me you can alter any DVD player to play any region DVD. Is this correct?

Theoretically yes. But how easy it is to do depends on the DVD player, some all it takes is the use of a special DVD to reset the region coding or the entering of a secret passcode, others might need a small switch to be moved in the electronic guts inside the player or they might need some major rewiring done to bypass one of the chips.

    HOWEVER...

Some Dvd's are in PAL formal, some in whatever-the-fuck we use here. Even if you can get the DVD player to play the region you want, you might not be able to watch the show properly, unless the dvd player converts this as well. This is why I can't watch my Brother's copy of the Spaced box set.
