  1. I've been asked to provide the music and soundtrack for a new podcast being launched by a friend of mine, so I've been doing a fair amount of atmospheric post-rock stuff lately. Having fun overdubbing feedback and suchlike, which Malin really doesn't appreciate at all, so I have to do all my recording while she's out. These are a couple of samples - the second one in particular I'm quite pleased with.

    Skåratinden

    Cold Law

I like both of those a lot. Very Godspeed You black Emperoresque

  2. Well that was probably the worst episode of anything I've ever sat through from start to finish!

Wasn't the best episode, but I wouldn't go that far.

Would have been better if Daryl had shouted "Fore" when he drove the zombies face onto Beths new cardigan.

  3. My knees. After spending 40 years of my life avoiding running in every way possible and loathing it with every ounce of my being, I decided to run a marathon (mid life crisis). I'm running for a very worthy charity and all that stuff, but I still pretty much hate running, been training since October and today I did an organised proper half marathon, or was supposed to, got half way and my knee was hurting so badly I had to retire. Now I can barely walk. 40 days to recover until the London Marathon, after that I will never run again, may even cut out walking fast.

  4. British TV watchers! Help me out.

Today I watched the first episode of Big Bad World:

Big Bad World is a comedy about what happens when you wait for life to begin. Ben has just graduated and the world should be his oyster, but he quickly finds himself back in his hometown of Great Yarmouth and nursing his as yet unformulated dreams.

The premise sounded good, but I thought the actual show was shite — weak jokes, unlikeable characters.

So can anyone who's watched it tell me, does it get better?

I love British comedy, and every year or so I make a point of investigating new shows. There seems to have been a bumper crop in 2013 (including a couple that flew under my radar in 2012). I'm loving Drifters, which has a roughly similar premise to Big Bad World except the cast is engaging and it has pizzazz.

Also on the list: Bad Education, Vicious, Him And Her, Yes Prime Minister (2013), Ambassadors, It's Kevin. Quite liked Big School, which I watched late last year, before the current intensive course began.

I'd recommend Uncle, which has just started over here, it's pretty funny, Fresh meat would probably appeal to you too going on your list and the first few series of Misfits if you haven't seen that.

  5. I bought into the Elite Dangerous Alpha test - the successor to the original Elite (sandbox space game). It's only combat scenarios in phase one of the alpha but wow have they pulled it off. Proper fun space dog fighting, if the rest of the game comes out as polished as this small bit it's going to be the game I've dreamed of since playing the original on my Spectrum 30 years ago.

  6. The Girl with all the Gifts is great, it's all set in Hertfordshire where I spent a fair bit of my life, Stevenage is full of braindead zombies - no change there then.

Dead Sea Deception was also very good, bit different to his usual stuff but well worth a read. I have the sequel to read next,

  7. I recently finished The city of Silk and steel, which was superb, my favourite book of 2013. Has anyone read The Dead sea Deception and it's sequel? Written By Mike but under a pen name of Adam Blake (discovered this from the back of The ship that sank twice).

  8. I enjoyed it more than the other two '..of the doctor' episodes, infact I enjoyed pretty much every second of it. The only criticism I've seen that I agree with is that it may have been a tad confusing for the casual christmas viewer with all the loose plots being tied up every 5 minutes. Loved the surprise Amy appearance and also the absence of River Song (who I've never really liked).

A fitting end for my favourite Doctor.
