  1. I just read the first 4 issues of newuniversal, and I liked it. I think that the decompression may be a little carried away, but not much. Especially when you read the original Star Brand comic, where he gets the power on page 3 and is souring through the clouds on page four. That is what was wrong with the original, BTW. It wasn't that the characters sucked, it was that, for all the posturing on Marvel's part about how this was "The real world, with noo aliens, just a few super powered people, acting like real people", the books (well, what I've read of them,or my recent rereading of the 1st 3 issues of Star Brand) featured characters that did not act like real people, but like exagerations of real people. Oh, and there WAS an alien.

That Justice sort? Wasn't he hastily retconned not to be an alien anymore after the comic had been running for a year or two?

Well, the guy who got the starbrand (Hal Jor...er...I mean Ken Connell) got it from a dying alien (who told him that his lack of fear made him the best one for it). Later in the 1st issue, he was attacked by an alien. (In the original new universe title, not in newuniversal)

  3. Last night I watched:

Idlewild. This was surprisingly good...maybe even great. 1930's style gangster/musical movie with a little magical realism, starring OutKast. definately worth seeing. I might buy it.

Strangers With Candy-It's that sort of humor that appeals to 14 year olds, but with a wink and a nudge. I'm not sure the wink validates it. Still, Amy Sidaris is funny, as is Stephen Colbert.

  4. Reading:

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov...about halfway through (reading it at the same time as the otter, then we discuss), WOW. This may be the most clever book I've read. So many puns, literary references, etc. It's been compared to Ulysses by James Joyce, and I can see why (I've glanced at the latter, but never actually read it...its on the list).

The Epic of Gilgamesh -Nice and short, I just started it. So far, it's interensting. I like Ekindu. For some reason, the journey into the forest reminds me of the forest oe Eruga in the old nintendo game "Rygar". That's pop culture for ya.

I Ching translated by Brian Brown Walker. I'm not so much reading it as consulting it, using the three coin method. I realize that this method is considered inferior to the "yarrow stick" method or the adapted coin method, but hey. I like the coin method.

I was thinking about reading The Bible , one or two books at a time, but my copy is cheap, and the print runs together. I may read the Koran instead.

    Besides that, lots of comics.

  5. Somehow, dispite wearing a completely AWESOME (and obnoxious) green plaid jacket that my father was once married in, I made it through St. Patty's Day without so much as a thimble of alcohol. That's OK, because I was hung over from the night before (in which I stopped drinking at 11:30, so I didn't even have a drink just after midnight.)

Still, I played some D&D and watched Santo VS. The Monsters or something like that. Luchadore movies are as good as booze.

  6. Man on the moon

I was satisfied, though perhaps that doesnt say much, given that i never heard of Kaufman before knowing about this film (But i did my homework).

Careys best role i saw him in yet, and while Andy comes off as a disturbed man, i wouldnt say it makes him unpersonable- The beginning and the end of the film is adorable and beautiful, if nothing else.

Its funny how charming such man can be.

See, this movie bugged me. I felt like Carrey was doing less of an acting job and more of an imitation. Plus, he made Andy sound like he was "in character" and completely backwards when everything I've read said that that was an act for the cameras, and that Andy was fairly naormal when talking to friends, family, his agent, etc.

  7. Okaaaaay, and you just knew there'd be a rainy cloud looming near to ruin stuff.Just had to sit through the first few seconds of another My Chemical Romance song after skipping a large article about them that was polluting my otherwise decent magazine.............okay I couldn't skip the fucking interview,if the singer points out one more time that his music "saves lives" my all consuming desire to punch him square in the nads, will manifest itself in me punching someone(anyone)in there nads*.

*nads is an american based peice of slang referring to a mans"cottons" or "stones" or "marbles."

I'm tired of the "saves lives" bullshit, but i find their music to be pretty listenable. Better than the rest of the pop-punk shit out there right now.

  8. I just read XIII vol. 1: Day of the Black Sun. Pretty good, though a little bland in some places. Also, due to some (I hope) translation boo-boos, characters frequently read things off of blank pieces of paper. Still, worth the read, and I look forward to vol. 2.

  9. I just watched The Man Who Fell To Earth. Hmmmmm. I really liked this movie, and I think I understood about 90% of it. Still didn't get the part with the farmers seeing the car (time travel?). Other than that, good, visually impressive, creepy film with some decent acting by Bowie.

Or possible just a good film with Bowie wandering about the set coked out of his head?

No, he was right first time.

The more I think about the movie, the more I like it. there were a few things that were needlessly weird, but, hey, it added to the "alien" feel of the movie. I liked how it felt almost like the world was alien...I could relate with Newton's motivations because I was seeing through his eyes.

I'm still not feeling the gold motorcycle helmets on the government thugs, though.

  10. I started reading the House of M trades...the Hulk one was pretty cool, the Fantastic 4....not so cool.

Also, from the library, I got the Castle Waiting collection and the Superman Returnes Preludes.

  12. No, it's not.. required, but I would watch it anyway. And no, it sheds no light on anything .. at least not in my opinion... it's way more confusing than the entire series (exaggerating here, a bit).

What I never really known.. is if this is considered the REAL end of the series. Is it? Or it's just another ending (mainly 'cause most of the people hated the original one)?

Anno (the director) says that it is an alternate ending. Personally, I think it is the same ending, only looking from outside Shinji's head.

  13. Hey, don't look at me. I don't dislike the Beach Boys, but I'm not a big fan either. A few songs aside, they've never really been my cup of tea.

I didn't assume that you would neccessarily be a fan, I just figured you'd have something to say about its musical importance or sommat.
